I would like first to give a big thanks to every spreader of our past, present and future issues (especially to KiLLraVen!). It seems the issue#1 was very well spread almost everywhere. As you'll notice, there are a few new features in this issue. I have added an 'Information' section containing various general info about labels, clubs, radio. I hope you'll send me more info about what's up in your own country! I have added also a list of known future events (check 'The Scene' section). I also add a main section 'Reporters Opinions and stories'. I'll put there all drug expierience i'll recieve which aren't 'scientific' (I mean, like the LSD or XTC articles which are in the 'Drugs Information' section). The bad point this time is we still haven't any reporters from the US (except dj Anabiosis who wrote some record reviews). I'm beginning to think they don't want to expose their scene to the rest of the world. Or perhaps they are too lazy to write some articles? Hey, come on! Write some! :-) I hope you'll enjoy this issue and hope you'll write some articles for the following issue(s)! You can also send us your sound protracker module(s)... To the attention of BBS users and people who hasn't internet access, we have added some BBS in the US and Autralia where you can send your articles if you leave near there. Look at the 'How to be reporter' section please. Check out the Amiga and/or the IBM PC version if you have these computers! The FTP distribution point (for all versions of the mag) is techno.stanford.edu:pub/raves/media/zines/planet.e/ Issue #3 will probably be out in October. Rave On!! C O S M I C B A B Y ...the trance wizard returns Well, this was a rave NEVER to forget!.. Firstly, I must describe the funky rave gear I was wearing: A Glo-in-the-dark skull UR T-Shirt, Renegade sweatshirt underneath, tie-dyed "tripper" pants. I also took a really annoying toy gun with flashing lights (yeah!) and 2 glow sticks (red and blue!).. now for a review of the RAVE OF THE YEAR!... Before the actual rave, we got a ride over to a mates place (thanks Mr. Tech :), smoked a few bongs and consumed some other substances (no comment!),and we ended up leaving at about 9:30pm to get to the Palace (Where PURE NightClub and several other raves have been held), and we found that there was a queue of approx 150-200 people waiting to get in. We waited about for 20 minutes or so and then people were slowly allowed entry, I made my way up to the front and got in real quick (thanks NewBreed Security!). Once inside, I quickly took a personal tour of the complex, here is a description: MAIN ROOM ~~~~~~~~~ Lighting/Laser Setups: - Multi-Colour Clearlight system (Same as the one at Tomorrows World, Wicked!) - Intergalactic Golden Scans (It's on the flyer!) (Fantastic swirls of colour with patterns of stars and other trip- inducing psychedelics) DJ/Performance Lineup: - Frankie D. - Travis - Jayse - The Spiritualist (Playing Live) - Will E. Tell - Jeff Tyler (Jeff T.) - Cosmic Baby (Playing Live, Ofcoz!) - Jeff Tyler (Again!) - Mystic Force - Richie Rich * This is where most of the action was during the night, and thus, I was in here for most of the time. PSY HARMONICS CHAMBER (Rear of the Palace - PURE) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lighting/Laser Setups: - No Lasers - Strobes & Coloured Scans DJ/Performance Lineup: - Russel Hardcore (Mystic Force) - Danny D - Ollie Olsen - Andrew Till * As I stated above, I didn't really hang about in any rooms other than the main room, but I did stay in here for about an hour or so when Russel was playing (good shit mate!). CHILLED OUT ~~~~~~~~~~~ Lighting/Laser Setups: - No Lasers - Usual "Chill Out" Lighting, producing many nice visual effects. DJ/Performance Lineup: - Brewster - Swytek - Squidgy (ooh err!) * I am not 100% sure if I am correct about the order of DJ's in here, as I am usually not much of a "Chill Out" type of person. sorry you ambient freaks :), but as far as I can tell, there was plenty of garage/house being played. This was most definately a CAPACITY event. It lasted from about 10pm till 9am. The palace was extremely packed full with about 5000-6000 people, and when Cosmic Baby played (3:30am till 5am), the main room was just insane!, it was a TOTAL euphoric experience, the room was just FULL of energy, you just could not help dancing, but i must say, i did prefer NICO/DARKSTAR when he came out here (I prefer the acid sounds more than the synth, personal opinion). Overall, this rave was most definately the RAVE OF THE YEAR for Melbourne, and perhaps all of Australia (not too sure tho :), If you were in Melbourne at the time, or you live here and you missed it.. TOUGH SHIT!, you deserve to suffer!... Reefa - Melbourne, Australia Mayday 6 Report #1 ================== Name: Mayday 6 - Rave Olympia Where: Westfalenhalle, Dortmund/Germany When: Saturday 30th April 94 Greetinx to all ravers! This is my personal report about Mayday Rave Olympia, the biggest rave event that ever took place in Europe. Everyone who wasn't there has really missed something. The atmosphere was simply great. In front of the "Dortmunder Westfalenhalle" were some guys playing breakbeats and other stuff. All around were people dancing. As all raves are supposed to be this was an event of total harmony. ;) It took round about an hour to get inside. They took the security very serious and searched everyone who wanted to get inside very carefully. But I think at an event with over 25000 people this is really necessary. The event took place in three big halls. The first and the biggest one was called "the arena" and there played the groups and DJs mentioned in the lineup. The second hall was the "pyramid chill area". There were two DJs who played trance all night long. The third hall was called the "mayday sub space". There were no live-acts, just DJs playing some records. In this third hall were 5 weatherballoons on which they projected some animations. It was quite nice. Here is the official lineup of "the arena": 18:00 Pierre Morgan 19:00 Cirillo 20:00 Miss Djax 20:50 Franky Jones 21:40 Ilsa Gold (live) 21:55 Steve Mason 22:45 Fly 23:35 RMB (live) 23:50 Dick 00:40 Members of Mayday (live) 00:55 Carl Cox 01:45 Marusha 02:35 Alien Factory (live) 02:50 Gizmo 03:40 Ultra Sonic (live) 03:55 Westbam 04:45 Raver's Nature (live) 05:00 Hardsequencer 05:50 Bonzai AllStar Act (live) 06:05 Paul Elstak 07:05 Genlog (live) 07:20 Tanith 08:20 Acid Junkies (live) 08:35 DJ Tom The live-acts: I didn't see all the live acts, because it took almost half an hour to get from on hall to the other because of the masses of people raving all around in the place. :) In my personal opinion the first live-act was also the worst one: Ilsa Gold. But it may be that it's only because I absolutely don't like their style. I think it's not quite inventive to digitize old songs and add some bassdrum to it. The crowd seemed to like it anyway. The live-act of Members of Mayday was also not that good, because they all only jumped around on the stage to their music that was played from records. I think a live-act should be a little more live than a record. :) I think Ultra Sonic made the best live-act of all. It was cool how their lead singer shouted the vocals of "Annihilating Rhythm" in the mic. It was also nice to see the two people holding big searchlight projectors in their hands and waving them around. Raver's Nature was also quite cool, but obviously they couldn't compete with Ultra Sonic. The DJs: The DJ I most wanted to hear was Steve Mason. I simply love the style of the Steve Mason Experience on BFBS. I must say that he didn't disappoint me. The mixes were cool as usual. When Marusha put her hands on the records the crowd simply went wild. It was obvious that she was the most-loved DJ that evening. :) I cannot say anything against all the other DJs. They all made their job very well. There was absolutely no second of boredom - just total ecstasy. ;) The lights: I have never seen such an amount of lasers, scanners, video- screens and strobes as on Mayday Rave Olympia. The laser-show was excellent. :) They used some sort of multicolour-lasers with which they projected very nice animations on some screens and on the dancing crowd. Other things: In some sort of "ring" around the arena you could buy everything a raver needs. You could buy Guarana in lots of different forms, but for quite high prices and Mayday-sweatshirts for even higher prices. But what I liked most was, that you could buy records and CDs that are normally not available in our shops. The prices of the CDs were quite normal. All in all I must say that Mayday 6 was the best rave-event I ever visited. It's already sure that I'll be at Mayday 7, too. ;) I hope to see ya there. But if you want to get there, be sure to order the tickets very early. A lot of people without tickets stood before the "Westfalenhalle" and hoped that they could buy a ticket from one of those cutthroats who were selling them for 200 DM and more. Normally they costed 60 DM plus postage. Bye! Andemar - Oldenburg, Germany Mayday 6 Report #2 ================== Name: Mayday 6 - Rave Olympia Where: Westfalenhalle, Dortmund/Germany When: Saturday 30th April 94 I live in munich and it's a long ride to reach Dortmund. I went by car and left munich at 10.30 am. The nearer I came to Dortmund, the more passing cars greeted with their horn or waved to me, when they saw the MAYDAY badge at the rear window of my car. When I stopped to stretch my legs or to drink something, there were always some other cars with ravers at the parking. It was no problem to find the location, I arrived finally at 5.30 pm at the parking and had to pay another 4 DM. With my camera I went to the main entrance and took some pictures of the crowd waiting there. There were ravers everywhere, some danced near there cars, where they had opened the trunk and put their loudspeakers outside. So it was a good start. Weather was fine (sun, but not too hot), some lay in the grass and slept a little bit. One pickup stood near the main entrance with one raver singing live to trance music. Often ravers asked me if I'd sell tickets, but I had none over. I asked what they would pay, and one said he'd pay 250 DM, but nobody sells his for that price, but he had an offer of 300.- My ticket I got for 70 DM, so I would have made quite a good deal if I bought one more to sell it. But I never thought they'd sell all 25.000 tickets in advance. There were signs which forbid cameras inside the hall, so I went back to the car and left it there. When I came back, the doors still weren't open and the first people began to shout and whistle. At half past 6 they began to let the people in and after 40 minutes I too was inside. They checked us for weapons and drugs, as always. At first I bought Pizza (5DM, fair price) and a raver-shirt (100 DM, quite much), because I thought the wear would soon be sold out and I couldn't lose that shirt but my money. Finally they'd actually had sold out those long shirts, so I was right. Some T- shirts were left. You also could buy MayDay posters, CDs, Video- Tapes of former MayDays, caps, even cups I think. Nearly everything. Commercialisation is becoming overwhelming, not too good if you ask me. Then I went in the main hall. It was full from the beginning on, but it was not TOO full, so that you'd get claustrophobia, like sometimes in munich, where you really can't turn your body any more. In the front was the DJ's desk, in the rear the Live-Act's desk, left and right loudspeaker walls. They had a lot of strobos, lasers and beams, I didn't count them. The top of the hall was closed, so it was fairly dark. The music was not too loud, I had louder raves already; the hall was too big and too high, so the sound didn't hurt. The quality was OK, I'd say it was one of the best sound systems I heard so far. They had two video screens (one the mirrored of the other) with sport scenes, i.e. there was the scene of a water diver, always repeated the jump and the way through the air just before he hit the water, then again the jump, etc. They had soccer scenes, dance scenes, and such, I think they were taken from the Olympic Games. Above all they had the MayDay logo, which sometimes was lighted colourfully. The DJ's or Live-Act's name was displayed with a Laser-Scroll, so you always knew who's at the decks. I had a timetable, but lost it, so I have to recall everything out of memory. In the main hall they kept the time totally. If the timetable said Live Act "Members of Mayday" is at time x, you can be sure it will start at x o'clock. That's germany. :) The first DJ was Pierre Morgan, after him came Cirillo. I think I heard a little bit of him, but don't like him so much. Then came Miss DJax. Her acid-set was OK, and the rave started to begin. Franky Jones I heard for the first time. I didn't know he's got so many techno hits and anthems. His style is techno (melodic) and mellow (according to psyched's reference samples... ;-) He really kicked. The crowd went crazy and he was the first positive surprise for me, I didn't hear of him before and he was SO good. I needed a break, and went up, drank something (Coke .4 litre 5 DM, that's expensive and unfair, beer 4 DM 1/3 litre), water in WC for free... :) and sat down to relax. From the top of the building you could see the light show. It was cool, although some ravers told me it would have been better last year. I can't compare it, but the laser level was cool. The beams enlightend the ravin' crowd. Everyone was in a good mood, you had the feeling of having 24999 friends. :-) That time I felt that I had a hard day. 5 hours sleep (I was in the cinema the day before and came home at 4am), 600km car ride, 2 hours raving. So I relaxed one hour or so, the DJs during that time I was not interested in. After relaxing I went to hall number two. There was Laurent Garnier. I think everybody knows him and nothing more must be said about his techno/mellow/trance (everything around 160 bpm) music and his DJ qualities. He's OK and he was as good as I knew him from his munich appearances. We raved on and everything was fine. During the different DJs sometimes there was a Live-Act, always in the Big Hall. Because I lost my timetable I do not know the sequence the Live-Acts were, but I heard live - Ultra Sonic I remember nothing, but it was OK - Members of Mayday I'd say THE highlight of Mayday 6. They spinned their Mayday anthems (of course everybody knew them) & some additional tracks and because of the shouting hall you sometimes couldn't hear the music! BTW, some had whistles too but only few. Westbam sat on one loudspeaker and sometimes stood up and waved or clapped his hands. There were around 20 ppl at the Live Act podium and the whole hall raved off. - Genlog same as Ultra Sonic - Raver's Nature they kicked. I wonder why I remember so little, but I think they showed us some hardcore techno. - Acid Junkies trance, if I remember right. It was really good Then I went to the other hall to Pascal F.E.O.S. Some on the net told me he'd be so good and I missed him as he was in munich. Those dudes are right! He spins ass-kicking hard-trance and we danced our ass off. =:-( The 2nd hall had 10 strobos (I counted them... hehe) and 4 balloons where they displayed some video animations. Good sound, even better than in the main hall, and the strobos kicked better because this hall wasn't so high. There were a lot of people, but not TOO much, you had enough place to dance and the music was really OK. To reach this hall you had to go through the chill-out area, camel cigarettes ppl were there and offered you some for free, but actually they wanted to sell there stuff of coz. Pascal is really a good DJ. When you think "wow, it's so groovin'" he mixes in another track, even more better. I think Pascal spinned during Marusha's event in the Main Hall. She's well known by me so I could skip her, as I went back to that hall (going to the other hall took about 10 min) everybody danced to her "Rainbow" song, they were all in a good mood. After I did a little break Westbam was in the Main Hall. This time he wasn't so excellent. Of course he was good and flipped some of his favorite songs, but there were also some experiments (unknown styles for him, even breakbeat one time; BTW: I heard no bb, except Carl Cox for some short time) and he couldn't create tension. One month ago I experienced him at a rave and there he really kicked. But this time there was too much unknown music and new style of him, not his techno/mellow, but more trance stuff. In the other hall I shortly heard LTJ Bukem. He spins some cool music, very low frequencies, so that the hall vibrates and your back shakes "from alone", the walls convulse and such. You heard the qualtiy of the sound system by that... Very new and unknown for me, nothing to dance (many ppl left), but cool. Some new kind of trance? I skipped Paul Estak on the one hand because I heard him often at former raves and know he's good, on the other hand because my power drifted away. It's very hard to keep track on his music and dancing and I want to live longer... :). Same with Carl Cox, but I danced a little bit when he spinned. He was good as usual. So I really thought to leave Mayday 6, but the music and feeling were simply too good! And I'm a lucky boy, because the pre-last DJ of MAYDAY 6 was DJ Tanith. I never heard him before, but I think: he was the best DJ that night I heard. He has trance, deeptrance and hardtrance. It is excellent, simply excellent. We all were low at power, but gave the last stomp to his beats. He knows how to create tension and mixes perfectly. I danced like mad and fell into trance. I got second power. After Tanith's set I experienced Acid Junkies' Live Act (trance, OK) and then DJ Tom (or Woody, don't know) was the final DJ. He had some popular techno songs, mostly trance (deeptrance). It was nice, I liked it, but then I knew "that was it" and left the hall at about 9am in the morning. And then the bad part of the day began. My car lock was destroyed by some unfriendly person (I heard 40 cars were theftet that night) and first I tried to find another raver who could open the car without a key. Many tried to help, but all failed and said it's impossible without proper tools. So after three hours the damned car was opened by an ADAC (german automobile club) and to avoid a bill, I became a member of that club (costs me 37 DM a year). :-/ Then I drove two ppl I met home to Koeln/Bonn and slept in the park of Bonn (ppl looking surprised about my clothes... :-) and then drove home. In total I went 1400km with the car, 200 droven by a friend. But it was worth it. Enough said. To summarize Mayday6: All music was pretty new, I'd say from the last four months. The scene seems to go into deeptrance, nearly everyone played it, gabber DJs excluded. There were at least 25000 ravers, perhaps more, around 35000. Ppl I met said that at 1am, as they arrived, many left the hall, it was like come & go. And the hall was always full, so in total there must be much more than 25000 visitors. The music was OK, the sound system too, the Line Up excellent (though Dark Raver missing... :-( ) but the visual system could have been better, especially the strobos in the main hall. Not to mension my request for free water (at raves in general). 5 DM for 0,4 litres Coke is way to much. And finally: They really could afford protection of the parking cars! Rave on at Mayday7: Universe Rave Eye Of The Shadow - Munich, Germany Mayday 6 Report #3 ================== What: MAYDAY "Rave Olympia" Where: Westfalenhalle - Dortmund, Germany When: 30-04-94 Rave Olympia Line-Up Hall 1: See above Hall 2: All night long Chill Out by Dj.Terry Belle and Dj Disko Hall 3: 19:00 - 20:30 : Plank 20:30 - 20:00 : HMC 22:00 - 23:30 : Ron Trent 23:30 - 00:50 : Laurent Garnier 00:50 - 02:10 : Hooligan 02:10 - 03:35 : LTJ Bukem 03:35 - 05:00 : Gangsta 05:00 - 06:30 : Pascal F.E.O.S. 06:30 - 08:00 : Woody Well, these where the Line-Ups, i've missed a lot of dj's :-( since i've arrived around 21:00 and was (finally) in at 22:00. And spent almost all the time in the mainhall... Something about the dj's and live act's i've seen.... The Fly ------- He played some really nice music, most of his music was Belgian hardcore with some other stuff to, his mixing quality was not that good, he mad a few mistakes, but who cares, the crowd went totally crazy when he played songs like "XTC-Alarm" and "The House of House", good set. Dj Dick ------- I think this one needs no comment, good like always! Played a bit of everyting, some new and old music all mixed togheter very well. Carl Cox -------- Finally he was on Mayday, he played a bit of everything, some breakbeats, some german hardcore, some belgian hardcore ofcoz all mixed very nice. He was one of the favourites on Mayday. Marusha ------- The people really ADORE this woman, the crowd went totally and I mean TOTALLY crazy! She played most of the time breakbeats, ofcoz togheter with her song "somewhere over the rainbow", when she was finished with playing, the music stopped and the crowd keeped yelling, "We want more" "We want more"....GREAT! Camel Live Silver Act --------------------- Alien Factory, i think these guys are from the U.K. For so far as i can remember it, it was not bad. Gizmo ----- Whoea, gabber. Time to get some food :-) Westbam ------- Also one of this guys that Germany adore's Very good one, some real and nice hardcore all mixed very well. Paul ---- Again some gabber stuff (At 06.00 Am?) Time to get some sleep :-) Bonzai All Stars ---------------- Not phrenetic system, not Dream your Dream, not Jones & Stephenson but ALL stars from Bonzai. It was actually a little mix from their best songs mixed very bad! I've seen this guys lots of times live, but this was one of their worst live act's i've seen! Tanith ------ Time for some trance, and what for trance, seems that the people waked up when this guy was playing (07.30Am :-)) And what can I say, AWESOME!! Acid Junkies (LIVE) ------------------- The last live act from Mayday and in my opinion one of the best! Some really nice Tb303 sounds! Tom --- Last dj on Mayday, he started is set at 08.40 and in my eyes, he was one of the best! Some very nice trance, the people knew that mayday was at it's end and the crowd went totally MAD! Maybe someting about the lights and music The hall from Rave Olympia (and also from the judgement day) is just PERFECT for a rave, in fact it's a hall used for indoor cycle competitions, with ofcoz the stairs upsairs. upstairs it gives you just an awesome view, looking at the thousands of people raving and the really great lasershow. It was almost the same as last year (The Judgement Day) But the music system was better, at least it sounded better. When you where upstairs looking at the BEAUTIFUL sight. When you where upstairs last year the quality of the music was very bad, you just heard some beats and that's almost all. The lights where also very good, almost the same as last year they just changed a couple of things. One of the best laser-show i've seen. Magazines are saying that it's the best laser-show ever seen on planet earth! Instead of one big hall like last year, they used this year 3 halls, one mainhall, one trance and one ambient Around the mainhall there where many stores who where selling T-Shirts, clothes, food, records, drinks.... and instead of 15.000 capacity now they had 25.000 and that's good to becouse it was VERY crowed, about 25.000 people. I have been in the other halls to, but not for long, coz i didn't like the music, when i was in hall 3 they played a lot of breakbeats and i just don't like it :-) The lights and the music-system was also not so good as in the mainhall. The projections of the baloons where very nice! One of the better light-effects i've seen. the ambient-halls was nice aswell, but i haven't spent much time there either, to slow for 3Am and when i was there for the second time at 8am EVERYBODY was lying on the floor :-). The presentation in the mainhall was also good, same as last year actually, when the dj begins to play they show the name of the dj on 2 big screens. I can't tell you much more, you just have to be there!! You should have been to a MAYDAY at least once in your life!!! The UnderTaker/Tragedy - Gent, Belgium Radio Attack'94 =============== Name; Radio Attack '94 Where; Weser Ems Halle, Oldenburg , Germany When; 19th March 1994 A big hi to all ravers in the world! As I've very much enjoyed reading the last issue of Planet E,I've decided to write an article myself. :) On the 19th of March there has been one of the biggest and maybe THE biggest rave party in northern Germany. It was called Radio Attack '94 and took place in the "Weser Ems Halle" in Oldenburg. It started at 19.30 and ended somewhat in the later morning. At first I want to show you the lineup: DJs: - DJ Hooligan (No Respect) - DJ Jens Mahlstedt (Superstition) - DJ Tom (Harthouse) - DJ Norman (Overdrive) - DJ Galax (Brainkiller) Live-Acts: - RMB (Adam & Eve) - Norman (Overdrive) - Jens (Superstition) - Ilsa Gold (Main Frame) - Lunatic Asylum (FNAC) - Arpeggiators/DJ Tom (Dorian Gray) - DJ Gizmo (Rave Records, NL) - DJ Dark Raver (Rave Records, NL) - DJ Fly (Bonzai) - DJ Lenny Dee (Industrial Strength, NY) - DJ Dr. Fernando (Music Man, BEL) - DJ Paul Elstak (Rooterdam) - DJ Camo (Brainkiller) - Phrenetic System (Bonzai) - PCP (No Respect) plus special guests. As you see, a lot of hard stuff had to be expected. ;) The rave took place in two halls. In the bigger one the live-acts took place and the there was a smaller one in which they played gabber and hardcore all the time. I arrived there at 19.30 and thought that I must be the first one to go there that early. But I was completely wrong and very surprised about the fact that the halls were half full of madly raving people. :) At round about 21.00 the first live-act started. They began right off with the first special guest. The group Humate entered the stage. As they are from Oldenburg it was some sort of a home-play for them and so the crowd went just wild. My personal opinion is that this was the best live act at that party, because they seemed to be the only group that was actually doing some live-things. They didn't just click on the start-button like RMB for example. After Humate Norman entered the stage and started off with his hit "The Big Deal" which everybody should know quite well. I think every raver is familiar with the vocal "You don't know what you're dealing with". He also played a lot of his other hard stuff and had the audience completely under control. After that the music came from vinyl for some time and it was a perfect opportunity to take a look the big bunch of sweat-shirts and loads of other goodies each raver needs. I must admit that it's quite expensive to go to such a party. :) After a while the three guys of RMB entered the stage. The music was not really bad, but I didn't like the presentation. They just hit the start-button for each song and then only jumped around on the stage. That's not quite what I expect from a live-act. One of the guys pretended to play on a keyboard from time to time, but it was quite obvious that it only belonged to their show. When they played their hit "The place to be" the crowd went wild again. When RMB had finished their act, Jens Mahlstedt put his fingers on the keyboard. At first there was just a VERY deep basstone for about 2 or 3 minutes which let vibrate your body and put a weird feeling into your stomach. I think you know what I mean. Obviously Jens Mahlstedt consists of two actors. (I think they have chosen a weird name then. :) They played some remixes of their well known Glomb EP. I must admit that it was a cool act. I like every tune from them. When I went out after that in order to get something to eat, Mark Spoon just passed one meter away from me. I had to look twice, because he hadn't been on the official line-up. He then went on the stage to spin some records. Unfortunately he made no live-act. :( I think he is better as an actor than as a DJ. I would have loved to see him play Stella or Follow Me. From time to time I went into the other hall to hear some really bad hardcore. That's why I maybe missed some live-acts in the other hall. As I returned from the hardcore-hall, Ilsa Gold was just doing a live-act. I cannot really say that I like their style, because all they do is to sample a very old song, play it a little faster and add some bassdrum to it. That's not what I call creativity, but the crowd seemed to like it anyway. From 3 o'clock on it was the time for DJ Gizmo, DJ Darkraver and all the other guys who love to make hardcore. I don't know exactly who was then on the stage, because it sounds all the same anyway. :) I hope that gabber will die out soon in Germany. Long live trance. ;) All in all I must say, that it was a quite cool party and I'm hoping that the organizers are planning to make a Radio-Attack 95 Party, too. Don't take this text as an objective evaluation. It's just my own opinion. ;) C U on Mayday Rave Olympia! :) Bye! Andemar - Oldenburg, Germany Taj Mahal ========= What: Taj Mahal When: Friday 18th of March '94 Where: Cherry Moon (Belgium / Lokeren) Organisation: KAOS Everybody was waiting and talking about this rave, Robert Armani is very succesful the last months in Belgium, so the Cherry Moon decided to invite him for the first time in Belgium. The dj's that evening where.... -* Robert Armani (ACV Roma, Italy) He played between 02.00 and 03.00 Everybody was waiting for this guy! And you could already image it, what I've seen that hour and what I've heard was really unbelievable! I have never seen to crowd going that crazy like in that hour!! There was VERY much ambiance on the dancefloor, (what do you want, there was even a kind of fire-work on the dancefloor and there where 8 TV's on the dancefloor playing the muppet-show togheter with some really HARD stamping beats from this DJ!! A very strange combination but VERY nice! He played the biggest succes-songs from himself toghter with some really HEAVY stuff! I think there were even some recordz above the 250Bpm !!!) (250Bpm, fire works and the muppet show, CRAZY!! You should try this once to! :-)) -* Rezy (At the Villa) He was the first DJ that evening, he played Trance, He mixes very good and has a very good taste, one of the better upcoming dj's of Belgium! -* Yves De Ruyter (Cherry Moon/Bonzai Recordz) Well, his style is completly different then the songs he makes for Bonzai Records. Some really NICE Hardtrance he has played, great music!! -* Philip Traikos Like Rezy he played the same style, he played between 01.00 and 02.00 very nice music, but not at the right moment! 01.00, 02.00 is not a moment to play trance if you ask me, maybe in the chill-out room, but definetly not in the Cherry Moon The Cherry Moon is know as "The Hardcore Temple Of Belgium":-) -* Stefaan He was the last Dj, and he is one of my favourites, he plays every week at the local radio station in Gent, he plays only trance, hardtrance and acid(and sometimes some more commercial work, like Dance Opera). GREAT work Stefaan, keep on doing the good work! This was certainly one of the best party's i've been to in 1994, Very good dj's and very good music, i'm waiting for the next Tai Mahal! My vote from this one 9/10 The UnderTaker/Tragdy - Gent, Belgium The Airport Megarave II ======================= Name; Techno & House Festival - The 12 hours Airport Mega Rave II Where; Former Munich airport - Munich, Germany, When; 14th February 1994, 10pm until 10 am The entrace was 45.00 DM, that's about 30$. I hadn't to pay it by myself because I held a party one week before and some nice guests donated the ticket... :) My friend Sacha wanted to take me with his car, but we missed each other (actually I wasn't at home...) so I came late, at about 23.30. It was no problem to get in. No crowd in front of the ticket window nor at the entrance. Inside it was half full, I'd say. At 2.00 it was overcrowded. I start to think about not to come to such raves, anymore because of the crowds. Many kids too. The hitting and touching of my raving neighbours makes me mad in certain moods. :( Terminal 1: Pierre Morgan 2nd Generation Tom Novy Trance as Mission / Muenchen Either he or Pierre Morgan started as we came. I didn't like it too much what they played. After some time I heard one hour Westbam Low Spirit / Berlin He's announced some time as the german No.1 DJ. I think he was. He's too much into commercial stuff right now and he can't get a crowd to Trance any more. I think he lost the feeling. But this one hour I heard him was quite good,at least better then the last two times he was here. The Light Show is quite OK in Terminal, but it cannot compete with the things I saw on TV about Frankfurt or heard from other ravers. Charterhalle or Zeppelinhalle have nearly no lasers. Westbam played some Anthems and the popular stuff, by no way HC. There were about 2000 ppl in the hall I estimate, it was too crowded and too hot. The home of the DJs in Terminal was five m above ground, so you couldn't see anything of their face, you just could imagine his body moves. And while he spinned we had a nice guy of the team who always shouted in his damned micro "This is DJ Westbam!"- it was so unprofessional! But overall it was OK. Lenny Dee New York is cool. I heard him for the first time and he plays some kind of hardcore, not bad. I really liked it. The crowd too, so it was about 30 minutes fun, longer I couldn't stay there cause I had to move to the other halls. Mark Spoon Jam & Spoon / Frankfurt I missed totally. :( After some time they closed the other halls and I heard Marusha Mayday / Berlin and Dick Mayday / Berlin Quite cool, they play the popular stuff in munich now. Marusha is too into HC and I raved on... :) Dark Raver Rotterdam The DJ I mostly waited for. I heard him once one month ago and he really kicked ass! But it was 8.30 in the morning when he begun. I had 9 hours raving behind and I nearly had no energy any more. There were only 500 ppl left I think. He started with his "This is Dark Raver from Rotterdam and he has some nice HC" or similiar and then he got the crowd moving! It was the ultimate event! Although more and more ppl went off and at the end only 50 ravers went home. So it was no satisfaction for MR Dark Raver I think but we had 100 meters * 20 meters for us... :) Live acts in Terminal Hardsequencer Low Spirit / Leipzig Alien Factory Generator Rec Dream your Dream Bonzai Rec. / Belgium I think I missed them... If not, they sucked. :) Zeppelinhalle: This location had large video screens in front. They had some nice effects and clips running, but it was somehow to light, I think. Zeppelinhalle has no spirit, I can't say why, but it's not nice there somehow. The sound is not good, that's the first thing. And it was too cold, that's the 2nd. So perhaps my opinion derives from the bad sound and temperature, but I didn't hear a DJ I liked here. There were too less ppl here, I think not more than 1000 during the night. Steve Poindexter Chicago His music is definiteley not my thing. It was new for me (never heard this style before) and I listened about 20 min, but I went off then. Miss DJax Djax-Up / Holland I only heard her some minutes. Too short to say something, besides that she looks nice. :) Paul vyn Dyk E-Werk Berlin He's cool! I only heard him some minutes (perhaps I should say that there was no strobo in Zeppelinhalle, at least very seldom they turned it on, and I need it to take off...), but it's OK. Mex Oz / Stuttgart Pascal F.E.O.S. Resistance D. / Frankfurt Dirk Van / Muenchen I missed them totally. I'd liked to hear Pascal, because I've heard so much good about him (heys psyched!). But I think I goofed and raved in Terminal while hi spinned. My friend told me he wasn't so good, so... Live acts in Zeppelinhalle Humate Lovestimulation / MFS Hardfloor Harthouse / Frankfurt Totally without me. Ultraworld: DR Atmo XS-Club / Frankfurt Upstart Ultraworld / Muenchen As I went there, there was only very soft music. This room was about 400 square metres and in the middle there was some kind of fireplace with a fake fire... It was all UV light and ppl sat at the walls. I went off to the action... :) Charterhalle: Tommy Yamaha Blub Club / Duesseldorf He started. Not to good I'd say, but I heard him only some minutes. Kid Paul Energy 52 / Berlin I heard him some time, but his style is not mine... He plays some kind of house I'd say. Rok Hardwax / Berlin Enne Oesterreich Olaf Delirium / Muenchen Missed them Jens Lissat No Respect Rec / Duesseldorf He's kewl! I heard him for the first time and it was really OK... Some popular techno with anthems and such, not too bad! Overall it was a great rave. I had 5 0,7 l sodas, that's 3,5 l in summa and each costs 6 DM (4$). There were so much DJs, that a "consumer attitude" arouse. We stood in front of the timetable and wondered which DJ to attend... But it was really a Technomania... At 10.00 Dark Raver ended and I went home by foot (40 minutes). :) Then I had to do some work during the day and at 10pm I fell into bed and slept like dead till the next morning. One more thing: Last Saturday Trepan and Dark Raver spinned at Zeppelinhalle. It sucked... So I think it's the sound in this Zeppelinhalle which makes the raves go nuts and for the next time I won't go there again. Westbam comes next saturday, but this time to Charterhalle. Let's hear what he does! Eye of the Shadow - Munich, Germany The Space Woodstock =================== What; Space - Woodstock Where; Ypsilon Idar Oberstein When; 4th March '94 22pm till 6th March 12am Here are the basic info about the rave: Space Woodstock 4.3. 22:00 - 6.3. 12:00 [35 DM !!!] Ypsilon Idar Oberstein Hotline: 069/425928 Music on 4 floors, 1000000 Watt Light, 25000 Watt Sound/floor, sleep & chill area DJs: Kid Paul, Marusha, Paul v. They had a car and it was a fast trip. We arrived at about 22:00, the doors had just opened and the line was not to big. The people at the door searched my jacket and my backpack, but there was not problem, they didn't had problems with my Guarana and my camera. The building is a big supermarket on normal days. We entered at the highest floor (trance and house), I think under the week it is a kind of C&A or something like that. It is a big flat room with only few lighteffects and PA only on one side, so there is enough room to talk and relax. What I didn't like directly was the large number of merchandising-ppl, there were a lot of club- wear, record, ... shops. And some people selling food and drinks. One floor under this floor is the main club, the Ypsilon it is a real club all of the week, so they didn't changed anything. It has a _real_big_ lightsystem, but the soundsystem was just average. On this floor there was the place where you could leave your clothes, when I droped my jacket and backpack, they had no tickets left, so I had to wait about 1/2 of an hour. After this I went down to the chill out floor. I really liked this one, it had two rooms with soft carpet. One of the was in dim light, the other in black-light, there was a DJ playing very smooth trance and new-age music, so it was the best place to relax. The lowest floor was in the parking place, it was called the "hardcore floor" and they played Hardcore, Gabber and Breakbeats most of the time, here were some shops and you could get something to eat. When I went in at 22:00, had droped my things, I saw the DJ- lineup sticking at one of the walls, it was printed on a A4-paper and you had to stand right in front of it to read the tiny font. What I saw first was: "Steve Pointdexter - top floor - 23:00, Miss Djaxx - top floor - 2:00". So I knewed my destination and danced my ass off. Steve played a very hard House-set, I loved it. Miss Djaxx played very hard Acid-Hardcore, not very good for dancing, but real quality-music. I met some people from Stuttgart and met a new boy, who was standing right on my side, when I realised that the ground was shaking from the people jumping. So we talked a little bit and decided to leave the rave at noon to get something to eat and enjoy the sun. At 10:00 I decided to get my backpack, but when I arrived at the Ypsilon, I realised that they closed it and wouldn't let me in. I used some tricks, and finally I got my backpack and left the rave with 7 of my new friends. We took two cars and found a place on a hill, where we could relax in the sun and listen to some music. This was the best part of the whole weekend. We went back at about 16:00 and the rave was full of garbage, the Ypsilon was still closed. I was not able to find out who was playing where, so I was in the house/trance-floor most of the time. In fact they weren't playing any house or trance music at all, but a set like the ones you can hear it in all the german clubs right now, I think the DJs were local DJs, at least I didn't recognized them. I started to walk around to find a nice place to stay, but it was really awful. Finally I found a raver from Stuttgart, which I knew from the Love-Parade-Oz-Bus, who said that he would leave at about 22:00 to Stuttgart (he wanted to got to the Splash-Club), so decided to go with him, but I lost him and I had to wait at the entrance. The entrance hall was very empty, which suprised me, until I saw that they closed the door and would not let anybody in, the place in front of the building was full of ravers, which had paid and left their jackets in the building, they were cold and waiting for about 3 hours. Finally I found my friend and we left, he dropped me at 3:00 at the Red Dog Club in Stuttgart, because I really needed some more Deep House music. I don't know if you realize, what I want to say, but its basicly: "it sucked !!!". They had the best DJs, a very good place, the best ravers in the best mood, a good sound system, good light, best weather, everything. And they destroyed it all with bad organisation, the security people were just stupid (sometimes they opened only one normal sized door to the Ypsilon, and everybody had to walk in and out through this door and there where 3 doors left !), too much money-makers in the place, no lineup-list available anywhere (after the first four were ripped off the wall, because you couldn't read them without a lens anyway), no trashcans (0 - zero - nooooone), ... I think this was my last big rave, I am more into clubbing and small raves, and now I know why ! Love Parade is an exception, but Love Parade is an exception in every aspect anyway ! I hope I could give you some of my feelings, its difficult to discribe it in words, even more difficult in english. Maybe I should mention that I took no drugs on the whole weekend, I drunk no alcohol. I only took some coffee and Guarana to stay awake. Maybe someone can write a review of the next Mayday, because it would be nice to compare. Techno music is getting real popular in Germany right now and I think there will be about 25000 people on Mayday. I think now there is a dimension reached, where raveing is not that much fun anymore, because of people making money with it. We got our Techno-Stars (Sven Vaeth, Marusha, Tanith, Marc Spoon, ...), we got techno-clothes, ...lets sell it ! I am really into house music now, because it is a small comunity with happy people and small clubs, but I hope there will something grow out of techno, which is more than the average 2-Unlimited listener can cope with, something for your mind not for the money of other ppl. But keep on raving anyway, because I know "we can make things happen!" Rave on Christof - Tuebingen, Germany THE SCENE ######### THE BELGIUM SCENE ================= Well ravers, here is my change to tell you something about the Belgium rave-scene. Belgium is a very good country if you wanna hear some rave music from the 'leading rave coutries' coz it's in the middle of all those countries. (I mean The United Kingdom, Germany, The Netherlands, Germany and France). Most of the Belgian ravers only know 2 labels "Bonzai-Records" and "Dance Opera". If you go out here, you hear a lot of Belgian products, (most of them are "Bonzai" & "Dance Opera" productions). Our raves are not very big (2000 - 4000) people. We don't have many mega-raves here, don't know how it comes but every time there's a very big rave, with some of the best international dj's, not many people are coming to this! There have been lot's of parties that seemed to be very good, with The Aphex Twin, Leo Annibaldi, 303 Nation, PCP, Jam & Spoon, Carl Cox... with other words, the top from the Rave-Scene, at that moment i was ashamed to be a belgian raver, becouz the party was a real disaster! Only a couple of 1000's people where there (2000 or 3000 I guess) nobody was dancing, and the dj's tried to do their best to get the people on the huge dancefloor. They have even stopped to music, a guy was standing on the podium and asked what was wrong with us, becouz nobody was dancing!! It was a hall with a capacity for more then 15.000 people! I guess we have bad organisers here in Belgium for these raves, coz every time there's a local rave (not a mega rave, most of the time that's a rave with the best know dj's from Belgium, (The Fly, Franky Jones, Yves Deruyter, The Bountyhunter, Liza'N'Eliaz, Cj.Bolland....) togheter with 1 or 2 international dj's, like the "Tai Mahal" party with Robert Armani. A little time ago, there was also a big rave in belgium called "The Rave Explosion Part III" with also very good dj's. There where many people there, (7000 - 8000) Why?... they where good organisers! I've got the new party review of May, and it seems that a lot of these parties are coming (local raves). All of these parties are mostly in the best know dancings of Belgium. Like on the 6th May "Filex The Housecat" with Mike Dred (Chicago), Yves De Ruyter (Cherry Moon), Deg (Mayday), Damien (Rave Explosion). On the 13th of May "2 Years Birthday Party" with Vapourspace (Detroit), Ritchie Hawtin, John Aquaviva (Detroit), Yves De Ruyter, Deg & Damien. 20 May with Hardfloor Live (Germany), Yves De Ruyter & Stefaan and on the 27 th of May Laurent Garnier (Fnac), Marcello (IT) Yves De Ruyter and live Speedy J and Moby. Well you can see it, not really Mega-Raves but more local raves, with a capacity from 3000 people. I think we have too many of those local ravers, and to little mega raves :-( It just impossible to go to every rave here in Belgium, coz they are to many of them. There are lots of nights that they are 4 or 5 like those raves i've mentioned above here. Maybe a little word about the flyers, almost all flyers are designed by "B&B productions" and i think that's a pitty, coz those guys can't make a decent flyer! If you've seen one flyer from B&B, you've seen them all, so B&B, fuck off and leave the designing of flyers to some professionals! The only thing you guys can do, is ripping a picture and put your text above this! I can do that do! Maybe something about the disco's here, they are lots of Rave- Disco's here and that's good because lots of disco's must close from time to time because more and more people are going to a disco, not to dance or listen to the music, but simply to sell drugs... I think that's very lame, those people are giving the rave-scene a really bad name. Some disco's must close at 05.00 Am (like the Cherry Moon). A year ago this place was open till 08.00 Am but since it has been closed for 6 months, they close their doors at 05.00 am :-(. But when this one closes, another one goes open at 05.00 or 06.00 Am, mostly that's a Sunday morning and they stay open till Thuesday morning :-) So you can rave here from the Saturday evening till Thuesday morning, and on friday you can start again. "House Is Not A Crime"! The UnderTaker/Tragedy - Gent, Belgium LONDON REPORT ============= When summer approaches there is always a lot going on in the various scenes, and as London is so full of dance culture anyway there is bound to be stuff I am going to miss! If you live in London and you want to be a reporter on chunky house & garage then get in touch! ** 'EAR DIS - JUNGLE IS NOW COOL ** That's right, it's Official! The last few weeks have seen most of the "trendy" music mags and the rest of the press aimed at dance youth running articles on how"it's quite good now actually" and "well, like any field of music there are innovators and copyists", namedropping the likes of DJ Crystl, LTJ Bukem etc. where previously they were slating across the board. The same publications were slagging the whole thing to *death* a month ago and now they have the balls to turn around as say "well,we always liked it a bit really". It takes massive neon signs saying "Innovators ->" before they give it a second look - even they couldn't overlook the introduction of live strings and vocals into hardcore tunes. Get one thing straight - the trendy mags hate jungle and hardcore because the followers of the music don't play a blind bit of attention to them. It jars on their ego. The press is run by old men, and hardcore is truly young, urban house. They never understood and they never will. Rave had the obvious hooks, and the rock techniques in the way the music was written. Modern hardcore, jungle, future dance or whatever you want to call it draws more heavily on reggae, ragga & hip hop production techniques - Rave tunes had one rolling rhythm, now the beats are chopped and scattered like no other music on the planet (to my knowledge). Helping all this media hype along is the regular hardcore show on Kiss F.M., on Wednesdays where Colin Dale used to be (he has moved to Thursdays). This is after the popularity of the Kiss Sessions by the likes of D.J. Rap, Jumping Jack Frost, etc. Jungle is now getting laaarge, but no tune has come near the charts as of yet (thank god), despite "classic" status being earned by a lot of 'em these days. CLUBS: CLUB LABYRNTH, 12 Dalston Lane, Hackney E8 - not that pricey (or large), Happy Hardcore joint frequented by Pulse F.M. crew with excellent dancey techno in the basement rooms. Good vibez. A.W.O.L. at the Paradise Club - the best in dark, hard and LOUD jungle, the likes of Mickey Finn resident DJ's. Nice and big, with a house room too that is firin' off. Also keep an eye out for the JUNGLE FEVER events, the safest in the capital. RADIO (east side of the manor only!): Shockin F.M. 90.00 (top rate happy hardcore), Kool F.M. 94.5 (the most intelligent M.C's and quality DJ's, big respect), Rush F.M. (wiked bad boy jungle, ruffest on the airwaves). Pulse FM looks like it has been on the recieving end of some DTI business, and Format has been quiet too. --+ TECHNO +-- There seems to be an awful lot of it about these days, more on the airwaves and the "Omniverse" (not Universe any more) produced Club U.K. is regularly RAMMED, and hardly suprising considering their consistently excellent DJ line-ups. The main growth area in the scene at the moment is definitely psychedelic house as played by Mr. C. and many others. The man from the Shamen Collective has been very busy recently by the looks of things, playing all over the place in London (including my local, the Wax - big up!) and further afield, also doing the Kiss sessions 1 - 4 a.m. every Wednesday in April, and on top of this tunes off his Plink Plonk label are getting played a lot too. Even fresher is the new strain of breakbeat techno, using straight-up hip hop beats at hip hop tempo, with added digi-funk - this is gonna be very cred indeed, and is currently being played by the more experimental D.J.'s. Andy Weatherall is getting jarred off with his Sabres of Paradise project judging by his recent interviews, but the club and label are still popular, also the Sabres of Paradise band are on a mini-tour with a new single, which I should hopefully be able to report on next time. Andy Weatherall with be DJ'ing along with Alex Knight (from Fat Cat Records, Covent Garden - tel. 071-497 1359) and they will be in Liverpool 11th/5, Newcastle Uni 12th/5 & back to London @ SW1 Club, 19th/5. But the buzz surrounding the Future Sound of London at the moment is immense. They have been doing the rounds of all the mags, and have been getting consistently excellent reviews for their forthcoming album ("Lifeforms", due May 16th). They do new sounds, with excellent melodies, in a real fu**ed-up way - originators in a full field, attracting attention from all kinds of musical folks, punks to avant-garde classicists. On top of this they are media gurus, producing all their own computer images, and will be broadcasting live on Radio One from the comfort of their studio on 14th May, 10 - 12 a.m. How do they do that? By coding the signal from their mixing desk, and sending it down the phone-line real-time via the new ISDN digital links to a decoder in the radio studio, to then be transmitted. They are also in the process of producing a 7-minute film on the theme of subversive T.V, hopefully to be broadcast on "the Late Show" in the U.K. A review of the album for sure next ish. CLUBS: FINAL FRONTIER @ CLUB U.K., Buckhold Rd, Wandsworth London SW18 -tel. 081 877 0110 (buses from Trafalgar Sq.), 10-6 am, 8 for members after 11, 6 before or 10/8 for non-members. Trap#14 - London, UK *** CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND PUBLIC ORDER BILL *** At the moment revisions to the above Bill are going through British Parliament. Effectively, it means you can get arrested for Tresspassing on Land, Failing to Leave Land, Making Prepara- tions to hold a "rave", Waiting for a gathering / "rave", Attending a Gathering / "rave", Squatting and Hunt Saboteuring. They are criminalising the lifestyles of travellers, ravers and squatters, and is a massive infringement on the liberties of people. The law is being introduced after members of the Spiral Tribe sound system were aquitted (found not guilty) after a marathon trial costing the taxpayer over 2 million pounds. In future, they would go down for it. The laws are likely to infringe upon Article 10 (Freedom of Human Expression) and Article 11 (freedom of assembly) of the European Court of Human Rights, and many groups in the UK are protesting about it, and are organizing a demo on May Day at Hyde Park Corner, London. I will be there with a camera to report what goes on. It should be massive, and then you know what could certainly hit the fan! *- THE MANIFESTATION -* I turned up at Speaker's Corner in Hyde Park around 2:30, the march to Trafalgar Square started around 3:00. There were thousands of people there, and it brought the centre of London to a standstill for a couple of hours, but yet the event went unreported in the local news - draw your own conclusions. The whole event went off very peacefully, and as it was a sunny day everybody was happy and goodnatured. Due to the wide scope of the Bill, the crowd was very diverse - it included ravers, travellers, squatters, hunt sabs., antinuclear protestors and many others. The crowd was also very noisy, as it was headed by the Desert Storm sound system - representatives from Spiral Tribe were also there, but kept a low profile given their recent legal hassles . The Megatripolis posse was also in evidence, and it was good to see so many colourful people swarming over Nelson's Column and packing out the Square totally, as well as the area in front of the National Gallery. Of course, the police were very much in evidence but the event was good-natured and there was no trouble - the closest to any problems I saw was when two ranked officers asked the sound system to stop playing in the middle of Trafalgar Square after all the speakers had finished. The van was surrounded by ravers who did not appreciate this, and the amount of verbal these blokes got made me glad I was not a policeman! But I could never see them allowing a free rave in the middle of Trafalgar Square on May Day, if they will no longer allow them on farmland miles from anywhere, even with the landowners permission! In short, the event was very successfull in that it united so many different people to a single cause, and it was said to be the biggest demonstration in the UK since the Poll Tax Riots - so why the media blackout? Planet-E is first with whats really going on! If you want to get involved in the fight against this legislation, and there can't be many people it does not affect, write to; The Advance Party, PO BOX 3290 LONDON. NW2 3UJ. or tel/fax 081 959 7525. Trap#14 - London, UK AMBIENT CITY 96.2MHz ==================== Only ambient. No commercial breaks. No DJs speaking. Nothing but ambient for three weeks. Ambient City got started when the cultural foundation(In Finland) called IMAGE found out that they had some extra money to spend to something. They decided to make something that had never been done before, and that's how the idea about a radio station playing ambient music was born. A team called Urban Research was set to make all the necessary arrangements. The Museum of Modern Arts (Nykytaiteen Museo) is providing a place for the radio transmitter. The radio transmitter is hidden into a steel sculpture inside the museum and the symbol of Ambient City is being projected to the front wall of the museum. A radio station called Radio City (96.2MHz) is taking care of the legalization of this event. Because the budget for the radio station is very small the foundation which collects money for the artists (based on copyrights) is taking less money than usually. The broadcasting started 16th of May and it will stop 6th June. There will be two other 3 week periods later this year and they will be broadcasted from different places. The broadcasting was supposed to start at 14:00, but I couldn't hear anything from my receiver that early. Later around 21:00 I was able to hear something but the signal was very weak. Next morning my receiver was able to pick quite strong signal, but the quality of the sound wasn't good enough so I had to switch my receiver to MONO-mode. The signal got stronger after a few days but there are still some problems with the broadcasting. These other problems are due to other hardware e.g. sometimes the sound is audible only from the left loudspeaker, but these problems do not appear very frequently. What is Ambient? The ambient played on Ambient City varies a lot. Sometimes there is only a human voice speaking or crooning, and sometimes there is a rather fast drum track behind the soft sounds. Everything between the most softest ambient to tracks which could even be considered as (almost) dance music is played. Acid style ambient hasn't been played a lot, but I have heard some tracks already (and I'm waiting for more). Based on advance notice, atleast these following artists have made unreleased mixes and new material especially to Ambient City: Pete Namlook, Fred Gianelli, Ritchie Hawtin, Richard Bell, Zoviet France, Sun Electric, Mono Junk, Aural Expansion and Sahko. Most of the music broadcasted is unpublished. So far have recognized only 1 track, and that was 'MLO: Winborn' from Rising High Records (that track didn't sound any different from the one I have). The music is compiled into tapes which are 2 hours long each. These tapes are mixed together by a computerized system. There are also periods when DJs are playing the music live, but atleast I can't tell the difference (the tapes are made by DJs). Some of the tapes played were compiled before 16th of May and propably somebody is right now making those tapes in some small studio. Merlin / SONiC - Helsinki, Finland THE CLUBS REPORTS ################# Pulverturm ========== Heya ravers! I want to tell you something about munich clubs, and I'm starting for this issue with the Pulverturm. This is a german word meaning "powder tower". It's located in "Schleissheimer Str.", you reach it best by car. A friend and I decided to go there. We wanted to meet there at about 23.30, but I didn't make it that fast (I'm always late... hehe). So I entered the tower shortly after midnight. As I approched to the site I heard the base and saw lots of cars parking everywhere. I had to leave my car five minutes from the entrance. Some ppl where standing around the door, perhaps waiting or cooling down. Who knows? There are some stairs and you're security checked. He checked nearly one minute. Why am I looking so suspicious... (still wondering). I don't know if there's a doorkeeper, at least I was allowed to come in... :) The fee is 10.- DM, that's about $6. It's quite cheap, compared to munich prices. It was totally crowded, even at this early time. I'd say the age spectrum is from 18 to 28,with the main ppl being 20-24. Overall the girls are younger compared to the boys, and there are some pretty fancy babes there.... :) In fact I never danced alone... :-> At first I watched the DJ, I had to warm up, because I was quite cold due to little sleep. His name is "Massiv", he's a newcomer, has no name yet. In a students' paper I read earlier stood that the Pulverturm has the best sound system of munich and that new- comer DJ's have a chance there to spin, but also they would sometimes invite some name DJ. He played trance music. In front of the club is a sign with "translogical night" standing on it. I think they only play Techno/Rave music on Wednesday even and Sunday during the day; on Friday there's Independent day, not my thing. He mixes very well, but he only mixes while going to the other LP. He didn't use any CD or DAT, and he plays one song a long time, he's not a quick flipper. The light effects in Pulverturm aren't very good. In fact I haven't seen any good light effects in munich, compared what I've seen in Berlin or read from others. There are two strobos, one white, the other red. They've a disco globe, one rainbow and two beams. DJ Massiv only turns on the strobo while the beat is running, not during the Synthi passages. Sometimes he fogged the room, but not often. The Pulverturm isn't a huge site, about 100 square metres, I guess, but with one back room containing some more ppl. There's a bar you can buy some drinks, I didn't. They have four Loudspeakers hanging from the ceiling. The sound is really good. In fact it was excellent, mainly because DJ Massiv turned at the volume and bass switch not to exceed the boxes' capacity. I've experienced many raves with the Loudspeakers only creeping because they couldn't make the low frequencies. Man,does that suck. But here it was really OK. After some time I had enough watched him (he's about 24 years old) and decided to join the crowd. The music he played was good, not trance any more, but some kind of mid-range techno, not HC. And what I liked best was that he didn't play the overplayed songs but new ones, that was really OK. I can't hear some techno pieces anymore, because everyone plays them and OK, they're really hip, but it's boring after some time. He played good music. At about 2 am the strobo wasn't turned out any more and we went trance. I didn't care much about my friend, of course we saw us at the beginning and he danced while I watched the DJ, then we danced some time both. At about 3 am he came and made a sign he wanted to leave and because I have a hard day today in my university :-) I decided to leave with him. I asked the doorkeeper how many ppl. would be there, and he guessed about 600. And it would last until 6 in the morning. So my conclusion: I'll check it out next week again. Eye of the Shadow - Munich, Germany REPORTERS OPINIONS AND STORIES ############################## The Virgin Raver ================ Hello Ravers, I am really awaking from my winer sleep. Summer is comming to Germany and every morning, when I am leaving a club the sun is shining. This gives us ravers the possibility to sit together in the grass or the forest to chill out. I really love this feeling when I arive at home at sunday evening and can fall into my bed turn some trance music on (X-Mix-1, Cosmic Baby or Sven Vaeth). Every weekend I meet new intresting people and make new friends and experiences. This is really nice after my big disapointments with the big commercial raves in the last months in germany. I really like clubs, I like warehouse or outdoor raves too, but this big things attract too many people that enjoy the party, but only take from the party and that don't give to the party. Last week really gave me my hope back. On wednesday there was a house-party in a big club. It was nothing special, only local House DJs, The Fancy Dancers (bunch of Transvestites) and lots of people that use the party like parasites (sp?). But there was this one girl: She wasn't very beautiful, she had no fancy clothes like ravers do, she had no idea of rythm and couldn't dance. She was looking like any normal german ca.20 years old girl with street clothes. But she was enjoying this party like hell. She jumped up and down and was laughing and she didn't care that the rythm was against her. In her face I saw complete joy. I think she was on a house party for the first time, and looked like I must looked like on my first techno/house experiences: Like a jerk but full of joy. The virgin raver. I saw this people before, you recognise them by their movements, their cloths. And you see them week after week, slowly changing and integrating in the rave-crowed. Firts they learn to understand/feel the music, then they learn to fall into trance and let the bass move their body, then they get fancy clothes, because they are getting brave enough to express themself with their clothes. I love to watch this progress. So I see hope for the german techno scene again, there are new people coming that feel the vibe and old friends, that allready know it. The "lets-buy-some-adidas-clothes-and-dance-to-marushas- breakbeat" crowed will vanish to the mainstream, and we will find new clubs, new location and new friends with new music, where we can feel the vibe. Some good places to go in Stuttgart at the moment: Red Dog: sunday morning from 5:00 to 8:00 [House] Oz: sunday morning from 3:00 to 11:00 [Techno] Wildparkstueble: sometimes sunday from 13:00-... Some good places to go in Bonn/Cologne at the moment: Oshos: sunday from 7:00-18:00 [House] Le Petit Prince: sunday from 6:00-18:00 [Techno] Warehouse: friday evening 2:00 & sunday 14:00 IZ: friday evening 2:00-4:00 [House] Ballhaus: wednesday 0:00-6:00 rave on Christof - Tuebingen, Germany An Anonymous Drug Experience ============================ Here's a mail found on alt.drugs newsgroup. It was posted anonymous, so unfortunately, I can't credit the author... This following text is his OWN story, his OWN opinion. psyched Well, I have received much encouragement to relate my experiences on Ecstasy, so here is an attempt... I was told almost a week in advance that I might have the opportunity to try Ecstasy with the young lady who acted as a guide for my first LSD trip. We were to meet at a given tube station not far from the nightclub where the experimentation would take place. I was not easy about trying a new psychedelic in a crowded place, realizing this could have been difficult to handle with LSD. But there lay the opportunity and I just hoped to have enough mental control (practice of Yoga helping) if things got tight. I had read about MDMA in Peter Stafford's Psychedelics Encyclopaedia, but was aware E's are not very often pure MDMA. In addition, the book had stayed at home and my memory of its contents had faded somewhat. So I scanned the net for an Ecstasy FAQ and read that, also reading whatever current reports of the experience were posted on alt.drugs. Quite strangely, that was also the week my father decided to give me a hysterical account of some absurd and manipulatively badly written article in a Swiss newspaper depicting the dreadful and possessive evils of the Love Pill. He knows I have profound interest in altered consciousness and its chemical gateways, but not what I'm up to in my spare time... Anyway, I psyched myself up all week for the event, and when the Saturday evening came, I left a little note on my desk explaining that if I was unlucky that night, the Quest had been worth it. As soon as we entered the nightclub, we went upstairs to the dance floor. An immense room with drapes hanging off all walls, a screen with a permanent slide of Planet Earth on it and countless balloons floating all around. Sitting in a corner of the stage, I was handed my 2/3 of a White Dove pill. I insisted on chewing it to taste it - I wanted some intimate contact with the substance I was about to share my mind with. Tasted awful. Very chemical. That made me laugh, especially looking at the face of my companion who had agreed to bite into it too. We washed the taste down with gulps from the traditional raver's water bottle, as our supplier explained to us a few of the basics and possible initial effects. "If you feel funny, get up and dance." she had said. Sure enough, about 25 minutes later, I was feeling slightly uncomfortable. Stomach ? Mind ? I wasn't sure. From feeling quite talkative I went to being rather silent and reserved. So I got up and began to jiggle about. That felt a whole lot better. I was soon joined by the other Ecstasy-newbie who commented that nothing was happening to her. "I feel weird", I said. "Keep dancing" our supplier repeated, she too waiting for her E to kick in. Minutes later I experienced a rush to the head - I felt for a few seconds that I was really going to lose it, and had a vision of myself huddled in a corner, crying for hours. Damn, just my luck I thought, a bad trip on the first one. I literally felt as if my mind was going to black out. No way, I thought, no way. My dad talks WOsD propaganda and I'm not having a bad trip. I quickly searched for my companions on the stage and got closer to them. I danced more energetically, trying to get into the music. Seconds later a most unbelievable surge of energy and gentle warmth rushed through my body. It was so brutally intense, all I could do for several minutes was inhale and let the breath come out as one long howl of indescriptible joy. Many around me joined in. It seemed as though half the stage was just hollering in joint ecstasy. Ecstasy. The perfect word. No other could have described what I was experiencing right then and there. Beyond words. The entire message was contained in a scream and the most intense smile my face had displayed in ages. Our supplier bounded up to us asking "are you OK ? Have you eased up both of you ? You were rather tense". I just grinned my face off. "I feel like hugging everybody" I shouted. "Then DO !" she yelled, flinging herself around my neck. Geez, that felt so GOOD ! Hugging was the most rewarding, comforting and uplifting experience ! This, for a person such as myself, usually quite conscious of personal space and physical contact with strangers, was a truly fascinating discovery. The music too was surrounding me in trance-like comfort. The sound spoke to every nerve in my body. This is the synergy between dance, mind and rythmic signatures Terrence McKenna was on about, I thought. Wow. I could enjoy the "Here and Now" - any time a thought of something unpleasant from the world would arise, I could look at it without stress, then gently push it out of my mind. It didn't matter that I had a project and exams. This state was pure, free, uninhibited. Speaking to people in the chill-out room was bliss. I wanted everybody to be OK, I wanted to know their names, how many times they came here, what they were on... They were all so friendly. One of them asked me "You're all loved up, right ?". I answered with the ecstatic grin. "It's their first E" he was told. He then got up, opened his arms wide, and gave me a big hug. There was something so pure and brotherly about the whole atmosphere, it was overwhelming. I noticed all the described effects : brighter lights and colours, increased physical energy yet great calm, strong empathy and forgiveness for agressive behaviour, merging with the music to a trance state... "Beware of inappropriate emotional bonding", I had read. Damn, that's what held me back from interacting more fully with an unusually pretty girl who seemed to want to dance with me. As I noticed she was looking into my eyes and half turning to face me, I felt my heartbeat pound away. Another amazing wave of warmth shot up through my stomach to the top of my head. I felt my entire body vibrating with pleasure. I was on E and I was being turned on. I just looked into her eyes. I was confused by the intensity of the attraction, and uncertain how much of this was real. I needed a nod from a friend to go ahead, or something like that. The nod never came. But I learned something really valuable there. Several years ago I got screwed up by a strong bondage with a girl. She moved away, and sure enough some predator attracted by her beauty seduced her. Though she chucked him away fast, that was the end for us. I had never been able to start another relationship with a girl since. I would miss any cue girls would send out to me, or even turn away from them, frightened. That Saturday night, Ecstasy cleared me from this emotional hangup. On the way down, I became introspective and meditative, and figured out what had been inhibiting me from falling in love again. This made me feel a great weight had just left my conscience, and I shared this feeling with friends immediately. I was once more free to love. Sounds dramatic, I know. But this realization was deep, complete and liberating. LSD had freed my mind from some of its shackle, Ecstasy was freeing my feelings. There would be so much more to say. But if you've read this far, I won't abuse your patience. What remains from the first experience is this emotional freedom, this feeling for Compassion (I now have a much better notion of what Buddha or Christ seemed to be preaching), and an increased ability to tune in to the structures and messages of music. On a more subtle level, I find it easier to initiate conversation with people and can cope better with aimless talk about this or that. I can also pick out almost anybody in a nightclub who is on E ! A real sharing and compassionate bunch - if a complete stranger happily offers you water, a spliff or a Vicks inhaler, I give you one guess as to what he's swallowed. Check the intense smile on his face, too. I have had only two more experiences with Ecstasy since. On one occasion I met a really interesting group on the dance floor, winding up back at their place smoking spliff and playing video games, with a good bed for the night ! It also confirmed the return of my ability to interact with girls without hangups. On the second occasion, I had twenty minutes of deeply mystical feeling ("I feel I'm talking to Jesus" I told my friend - this being from an agnostic). I also had a blinding moment in which I felt intensely how deeply important my friends are to me and how far beyond ordinary bonds our friendship goes. So for whoever is going to try Ecstasy : aside from the usual drink-lots-of-water-and-wear-loose-clothing advice, prepare for times of howling beauty and buzzing interactions. Remember you can look at personal problems in a warm detached manner and maybe solve emotional history problems. And prepare for the ultimate experiences in dancing. RECORDS REVIEWS ############### BREAKBEAT ********* Artist; BADD 102 Tracks Name; All Crew / Def Con Sound / Total Time Label; Unatural Light ref MRI 004 If you listen to ZONE FM, then All Crew will be a familar tune, as it the backing track for one of their adverts. A tough track with lots of laser effects and drum patterns, probably out in a remix form with stronger laser effects, but I couldn't be sure. Worth buying this records just for this track as it is a fine example of creative junglism. The other tracks are worth a listen, but not a patch on All Crew. Danny - UK EP Title; Better Days EP Artist; Formula 7 Label; Quayside Records Now earlier on I said I had heard better things from Bizzy B, well this is a good example of what he can really do. Teaming up with TDK, a fucking wicked drum and bass EP has been created. All three tracks threaten to blow up your speakers and beat you senslessly into the ground with the ferocity of drum patterns and rawness of bass. Seek this one out and you will not be disap- pointed. Tracks include Throwback, Betterdays and Religion, my personal favourite being Religion with its unrelenting speed and awesome breakdown. Danny - UK Artist; Bug Kahn and the Plastic Jam Tracks Name; Made In 2 Minutes (Various Mixes) Label; Peach Records ref PWLT 286A A bit late with this one. Bought it on the strength of the DR S GACHET mix, great bongo effects mingled in to the tough drum break. Other mixes by, Origin Unknown, New Class A, Hansen and Nelson and the Original Mix. Dance, Rap and Hardcore all one piece of vinyl, interesting. Danny - UK Artist; DJ Nut Nut and Pure Science Tracks name; The Rumble / Virtual Reality Label; Production House ref PNT 058 Pressed on ten inch green transparent vinyl, the two tracks on offer here are very different from one another. Virtual Reality, the evil dead mix, is dark as dark can get, with a snared drum pattern and strange synth arrangements. The Rumble starts with a spoken intro, which is repeated occasionally later in the track over a clean break, tougher than Virtual Reality. Backed with various synth sounds, and with a great arms in the air breakdown midway through, this track is firing on all cylinders. Danny - UK Soooo dark that you couldn't even imagine that before!!! Darkside has been very unpopular in UK for a while, it was described as 'undanceable', unhappy and aggressive. Let's say it is, yes, but darkside is sometime so powerfull that you can forget everything, and that's what this Ep is ... You can even dance on it, because the beats are not too much broken by noises and effects, and the 2 last minutes (after the final break) are so perfect that you've got the sensation to fly away ... Try it by yourself, if you like darkside a bit (of course), you'll probably be disturbed when listening the first time, but you'll enjoy it for sure... Rating : 9/10 Terrorist - Geneva, Switzerland Artist; DJ Seduction Tracks Name; Got The Music / Everybody Label; Impact Records ref IMP 021 Got the music, is jungle drum and bass near its best. An original break overlaid periodically with a female vocal claiming "I got the music in me", with scratching effect appearing periodically in the background. Now Everybody, is the track I first heard, and which made me buy this record, what a track it is. Banging drums, spun back and forwards, starting and stopping, lots of atmosphere and great breakdowns make this one of the best tracks around at the moment. Respect to you Seduction. Danny - UK EP Title; Droppin' Science Artist; Danny Breaks Label; Droppin' Science ref DS 001 If you've been to a rave in the past couple of months, you will have almost certainly gone manic to this tune. Starting with chants of Oooohhh baby, Oooohh baby, before the rolling drums come in, starting and stopping, while the chants continue.Massive breakdowns, with the sounds of a husky female voice, matched with incredible drum patterns, make this a track that must be sought out and bought. The other track (no track names given), again is a hard drum and bass track, with a unique sound, including great female chants and jungle effects. Wicked. A have heard a rumour that Danny Breaks is reponsible for this, but his name does not appear anywhere on the label. Danny - UK Artist; ENFORCER Tracks name; 40 Watt Range / Dam Tuff (Remix) Label; Awesome Records ref SL 019 It would seem that I have left two of the best tunes around at the moment until last. Dam Tuff starts of with a synth pattern similar to that in Grooveriders Sinister track, before a scratched "So Damm Tuff" kicks in and the drum pattern fires off in all directions. If anyone can point me in the direction of any other tracks released by theses guys, I would be grateful. Danny - UK EP Title; Remixs II Artist; ADRIAN + CRIMINAL Label; Knite Force ref. KF15 Some excellent ragga-jungle breakbeat here ! Yep, just like HEXAGONE this ep does contains 3 tracks and only the A-side is really excellent (the B-side is too much like old-school tune : accelerated voices, old-time-like beat, 'space'-strings, nothing exceptional but still enjoyable). The A-side alone is a must : excellent beat (a la SL2), perfect ragga cuts, and very happy feeling. This track is very often mixed by SLIPMATT or GROOVERIDER around UK... A must have for all jungle feaks. Rating : 10/10 (A-side) 6/10 (B-side) Terrorist - Geneva, Switzerland Artist; Slate 2 Tracks name; Fighting Without Fighting (Intro Mix) / Give It All U Got / Fighting Without Fighting (Dubplate Mix) Label; Brain Records ref DOPE 17 No thundering drums in this one, lots of samples topped up with a rolling break and large amounts of snare. A pleasant track, but I've heard better from Bizzy B. Give It All U Got is a booming bass tune, complemented by a female vocal and melodic breakdowns. Danny - UK Artist; The Full SP Tracks name; S-Capaid / Raw Basics (Tango Remix) Label; Face Records ref FACE 103 Two well known tracks here, the first, Raw Basics has been with us for some time now, but has been revitalised by a great remix by Tango. Lots of differing drum patterns and spinbacks, as well as a ray gun / laser effect, in a similar vein to Terminator (Metal Heads) and Sinister (Grooverider). S-Capaid is another well heard track, great drum patterns over swirling background noises culminating with a dinging sound before breaking down, building back up and rushing off into another great drum break. More of this please. Danny - UK EP Title; Volume One Artist; Frantic and Impulse Label; Homegrown Records ref HG 004 The piece of plastic I have picked up from the Homegrown label. The first being DJ's Unknown Vol. 1, and this is as good, if not better. Lots of chants, strings and piano breaks, creating a track with an overall great mood and feel. The side playing at 33rpm is on the darker side, but still retains a vibrant feel, but neither track is classic stuff. I believe this EP may be subtitled The Light and Dark EP, if so, it is very apt. Danny - UK EP Title; Volume 2 Artist; Future Sound Of Hardcore Tracks name; Promised Land / Desire Label; Dee Jay Recordings ref DJX 0014 Another slamming release from this well established label. Promised Land, starts slowly, gradually building up to a smooth tough break, with a plink plonk backing sound. A slight change in pace midway through the track, and the introduction of additional background sounds, make this a stormer of a track. Desire is backed by a dreamy, melodic tune interjected with massive drum breaks, changing in pattern throughout the track. Both tracks are as good as each other, that is, top rate. Danny - UK EP Title; Volume 4 Artist; Swift and Zinc Tracks name; This Side Of The Moon / Up Above / Niceness Label; Brain Records ref SAZ 004 Three tracks all similar to one another. All have good clean crisp breaks, with nice breakdowns, with a repetetive female vocal mixed in and out. Niceness features some good samples, but a lot have been used before. A powerfull EP, but slightly lacking in originality, saved by This Side Of The Moon which is definitely worth checking out. In its own words "Pump Up The Bass". Danny - UK TECHNO / ACID / TRANCE ********************** EP Title; Bon Appetit (double) Artist; ACRID ABEYANCE Label; Important ref. IMP009 Woaw ! GOD ! Shame on you HardFloor !!! (just joking...) 303 is the word for this germand duo (featuring PLANK,who already released a few tunes under Important record, such as the great "Acid wars" Ep). You can feel it as an HardFloor copy but it's not ! I think they are more inovative than HardFloor because they aren't using always the same line for all tunes. Some are 120bpm club music (acid anyway), the rest is 156bpm hardtrance! But both sides are very impressive. The bassline is huge, the beat perfect and you can feel the power comming up and up till the end of the tunes. Near all tracks are playable for a rave, choose the slowest for the beginning of the set, the fastest for the hardtrance part, mix them with some HardFloor or Acid Rain for the most perfect combination. Rating : 9/10 Terrorist - Geneva, Switzerland EP Title; Burning trash floor Artist; Hexagone Label; DJAX-UP ref. DJAX-UP-193 One more acid vynil, the A-side is really excellent : slow down beat, 303, furious bass... Slow acid, not too far from the "Acid Eiffel" of CHOICE. The B-side is a little weaker : two ambient- with-a-beat tunes, not really mixable, and so different from the A-side that you can't imagine it's the same Ep !!! Anyway the acid track alone is worth buying ! Rating : 9/10 (A-side) 5/10 (B-side) By the way, RANDOM XS Ep (DJAX-UP-195) is quite the same as this one. Check it out the acid side... Terrorist - Geneva, Switzerland EP Title; Diamond Lil's Artist; Friends, Lovers & Family Label; Rising High, UK OK... I saw a review of this on the internet claiming that the standout track was Alcatraz. Wrong... that's the played-out track. Gimme fresh acid, not that spoiled citrus. The one to look for (and in my opinion the only decent one) is the title track. This is a fine trance workout in the fashion of Edenhouse's Never Mind. It sparkles like the surface of a stream on a sunny morning. At the moment, I give it an 8.5/10 DJ Anabiosis - St Louis, USA LP Title; Funalogue (mini-Lp) Artist; Hardfloor Label; Harthouse Yes! The new hardfloor (how many of you were waiting this?! :-) Let start by the title track "Funalogue": Well it's a 125bpm tune starting with a kind of speedy tribal garage rhythm. It sounds like a normal garage tune until the 2nd minute, when a typical hardfloor sound begins (well, it's not an acid sound but...). A very repetitive sound. 3:30 min after the start, the break. And then... the acid sounds. All this is the typical hardfloor scheme, no? :-) With this one, they continue their successful style. No more to say about that. Now the 2nd tune "Alternative": This one is much better than "Funalogue". Quite great if you listen to it in background! A slow 107bpm tune with some nice 303 with a string behind. Well, this one's a worth 8 min track. Rating: 7/10 "Confuss": Cool! It start with a nice agressive sound and just a bassdrum. Then, all the component of the drumline are added slowly. After 1:30 min the 303 sound starts smoothly but surely :-). Very nice 303 sequence. 1:30min after another 303 sound is added, but this one's aggressive! A little bit repetitive but it's so good!! A great very danceable 140bpm tune (hmmm, I hope to hear this one in a huge party soon! Should be excellent!). Approximately 6:30min long. Rating: 8/10 "Roarrh": ohhh! what a noisy bass! hardfloor never used that! ;-) Yeah, this tune is quite surprising. 155bpm, 4:15min, that's very unusual from them, no?! :) It's also a deception (after listening to "Confuss"!). Deception coz the 303 acid (and this one is ACID here) sequence is bad and boring :-( Why have they tried to compose a kind of hardcore tune? Coz, in this style there are some other groups which make much much better tunes. Hard tunes aren't a good thing from the part of hardfloor. It's a shame. Rating: 4/10 "Rosinenbrot": hmm... it's written 136bpm. This should sounds more as an hardfloor tune than the previous one :) Yes! but, unfortunately it sounds boring. No interesting strings or 303 sequences here. It seems they tried some new tribal effects (but you have to listen to carefully if you want to hear all the percussions). I think this one isn't worth to listen to. Approximately 5 min. Conclusion: Personnaly I think only "Alternative" and "Confuss" are worth to have. Some strictly typical tunes from them, but they prove to me in this album that they aren't good when they change. Rating for the global album: 5/10 psyched - Geneva, Switzerland ps: Thanks to Terrorist for giving me a tape with these tunes :) EP Title; Meteor Shower (double) Artist; Acid Rain III Label; Underground Resistance ref. UR-028A The Underground acid scene of the united states seems to finally take off with dj's like Hyperactive or EFX, but mainly with the Underground Resistance artist such as ACID RAIN. I bought their "Storm continues" Ep one year ago, and it was like an electric shock : it was one of my first real acid-techno Ep. So I couldn't wait for more and finally here's a lots more ! More 303, more speed, more acid-orientated tunes ... The only regret I have : some tracks are a bit repetitive ... but when it's so enjoyable then you don't care ! Rating : 8/10 Terrorist - Geneva, Switzerland EP Title; Parano‹d Experience (double) Artist; Acid Junkies Label; DJAX-UP ref. DJAX-UP-192 I could describe this as experimental acid and the title of this double-ep reveal the real nature of the contents : something really parano‹d. Some tunes are so strange that you can't even mix them ! Lots of twisted 303, some strange noises around, giving you something really wild. At the end you'll get the feeling of something not finished, not fully packed like those ACRID/HardFloor basslines and beats, missing coherence or so... This is maybe real underground acid. Rating : 7/10 Terrorist - Geneva, Switzerland EP Title; Pepper/Beam Me Up! (Two Gingerious Remixes) Artist; Speedy J Label; BMU, Holland Pepper (the Hot Mix). Yep, it's spicy allright. Gourmet ingredients. Techno, add trance, mix well. 2 pinches of industrial. Fold ingredients until 133 beats per minute is obtained. Notes: this recipe is quite intricate, but at the same time, it's really hard to go wrong with it. The varying elements provide appeal for many types of listeners. The hard bubbling noise is similar to the high end on the Orbital remix of Meat Beat Manifesto's Mindstream.... stay away from the b-side, poor digestion likely to result... Still a good slab to fill your ears 8.5/10 DJ Anabiosis - St Louis, USA LP Title; SECRET LIFE OF TRANCE vol. 2 Label; Rising High records This is a massive quadruple L.P. with 18 tracks, and is just about the best techno compilation about at the moment. It's not just trance-y however, it has a real cross-section of techno styles - but no REAL hard stuff, or gabba. The best of the real trancers is "The Beat Just Goes on and on..." by Perry & Rhodan - your mind just switches off when you listen to it - totally hypnotising, oustanding tune, bound to be a classic. "Flexor" by Influx is a bit more mellow than their older stuff on the Sapho label (an offshoot og R.H.), and is an odd, spacey trancer. You've also got the plonky Hardfloor remix of "Fever Called Love", and on the acid tip you also have Sequential's "Trip to Paradise" and the tunes by Cybertrax, Hearts of Space (happy acid, nice one) RD1 (great for mixing) and Balil's appregiating climber "Parasight", with a kind of orchgestral acid sound to it. Other, more Euro-sounding techno tunes include 4 Voice's "Eternal Spirit", which has a big swooshy synth intro and gets a bit AFXy later on, and also Detune's excellent "Irradiation". Other outstanding tracks are the New London School of Electronics "Voices of the Rainforest", the excellent "Pick Whistle" by Kibu (shifty moody dancey techno house) and the recorded live set by Pink Elln, etc - pretty odd dead spacey techno, i like it! Also here for the hedfreaks is "Under Water" by Dreamfish (Mixmaster Morris & Pete Namlook) taking up one side of vinyl. In short, it's excellent!!! Something for everyone,no doubt, and it also gets you to listen to various styles in the "ever- growing world of techno" (to quote Colin Dale). Trap #14 - London, UK 20/4/1994. EP Title; Sonic Solution Artist; CJ Bolland Track reviewed; Turbulence Label; R&S Waooow! CJ Bolland kicked my ass with this tune!! I love it! Some great unusual 303 sounds and a very nice drumline (a kind of breakbeat sometimes).Very nice breaks where the 303 is echoed. In some aspects it's close to The Source style (the 303 sound and sequence). It should turn around 156bpm. Approximatly 6 min long. If you like The Source (but who don't?), you should like this one too! Rating: 9/10 psyched - Geneva, Switzerland EP Title; Stirs and Whips Artist; Synful Dyme Label; Superstition, Holland All the trax here are good. Pin Pac reminds me a bit of Acid Eiffel. Camelon and Big Pik are constantly evolving, roiling trance (yes, I know, an odd adjective :) ). Better yet, which is saying something, is Biadial. This is peaceful and uplifting early morning trance of the send-me-home-in-a-good-mood hybrid. 9.5/10 DJ Anabiosis - St Louis, USA LP Title; The Frankfurt Tokyo Connection Artist; Susumu Yokota Label; Harthouse Again time for some really quality music from the "Frankfurt Harthouse" label. All songs on the CD are written by Susumu Yokota (he's a GENIOUS!) The style is Trance/Hardtrance. the cd offers you 10 songs and a kind of intro.... 1. In the Beginning 2. Panicwaves 3. Source Of Soul 4. Tune For A Replicant 5. A Sonic Fairy-Tale 6. Spacious House 7. Judgement Day 8. Follow The Sonic Leader 9. Japanese Therapy 10. Wicked City 11. Trancewheel All,the songs are very good, certainly if you are a Trance-lover. Songs like "Judgement Day" will take you to higher atmospeheres! (without taking any drugs :-)) It's really a masterpiece. This cd will keep you in a trance from the first minute to the last one!! The intro is nice as well, with some typical sounds from Tokyo, and even an airplane! Sounds all very real! :-)) Yo trancers out there, buy it! It's maybe difficult to get your hands on this one but it's worth it!! My vote for this one, 9/10 The UnderTaker/Tragedy - Gent, Belgium CD Title; X-MIX-2 Destination Planet Dream Artist; Laurent Garnier Label; !k7 record ref. k7027cd French and euro leading dj Laurent Garnier is mixing over 77 minutes of 18 vary-speed tracks, from near-deep stuff to near- hardtrance. The mix is different from the video and contains 3 extra tracks. On the CD you'll find only 1 tune, 77 minutes long and that's it ! The mixes are so perfect that you feel you're listening to one long track! I think that Laurent is experiencing on this CD the way he loves to play : mixing togheter DEEPSIDE with ESSENCE OF NATURE, slow beats with hard beats. The result is excellent, maybe too slow for my taste. Of course It's not available on vinyl as it's already mixed ! Just to feed your ears. Rating : 9/10 for the mixing work 6/10 for the selection Terrorist - Geneva, Switzerland EP Title; Ztringz of life (double) Artist; Resistance-D Label; HartHouse ref. HH-LP-4 (also on CD) The Resistance Duo is radically moving to something new with this new album. After such great techno tracks as "Human", "Eclipse" ... they turned to clean'n'cold trance. You can't feel the Resistance D power anymore, it's more like listening to JM JARRE! All tracks are very well composed : rhythms, breaks, bass... but that's NOT enough, you can't feel the little thing which made the difference on the previous records. Personally I can't even give you the name of a tune I will play for a rave ! The question is : Is Harthouse dying ?
