Since last Issue, some good news have been announced, like the organisation of the 1st big outdoor event in UK since the cancellation of the Obsession beach festival past summer and the Woodstock 2 festival in summer 93. I'm sure this event - The Tribal Gathering 95 - will have an huge success. Universe, its promotor, will also organise a huge party near Cologne (Germany) in June, 9 months after the big success of the Tribal Gathering 94 in Munich's old Airport ! Some rumors are running about a massive outdoor party in Switzerland and about the size of the Energy 95 rave: 40000 people ! Is this the year of the big events ? Anyway, I find that the quality of the techno played at the big raves decrease months after months, but that's my own opinion... Keep the vibe and the quality of music to a high standard ! And support the real techno/house music lovers ! Ok, I finish with my own consideration now :-) I hope you'll have pleasure reading this issue. I plan to have some interview(s) of interesting people in the scene for the next issue. I hope it will all work fine. And please, send me some articles :-) Thanks for reading Planet-E ! EVENTS REPORTS /\/\/\/\/\/\/\ New Year's Eve in Vienna, Austria ================================= Hi Ravers, heres what happened in Vienna on New Year's eve 94-95. Well even though it wasn't part of the real New Years Eve my celebrating began in style on Wed. 28th: Derrick May DJing in Space Jungle. This is normally a pure techno nite with house DJs normally only managing to clear the floor. But this bloke was unbelievable. He mixed house, afro and techno and kept the dance floor moving the whole nite. He had people dancing who normally don't: eg other DJs. He even managed to get away with playing Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" and actually getting whoops from the crowd for doing so! If you'd have told me that I was going to be dancing to disco classics at the start of the evening I would have asked what sort of trip you're on! He managed to transfer so much energy across to us. Austria's had a lot of name DJs visiting this last year (Laurent Garnier (2nd best), Westbam, Marusha, Sven Vaeth, Craig Walsh, DJAX, Jeff Mills, Roland Casper, Hooligan, Mark NRG, ...) but he was incredible, and for the whole evening. And I *hadn't* taken anything! ;-) I wanted to leave early (cos of work) but had to stay until 6am for the very last record! Well, stayed in then saving energy 'till New Years eve where we'd decided not to celebrate as usual in a small group but try a rave for once. Well we had a big choice (for Vienna): massive rave at Messepalast with name DJs but at ATS 500,- too expensive; Spiral Tribe illegal rave somewhere (free entry as always with Spiral Tribe) (secret tel. no.) and then the annual illegal rave in the "church" (also free entry). We chose the last one as it's been supposedly excellent for the last 2 years. And it was excellent. We found it eventually at 23:57 and so opened our Champagne bottle outside on the street! After we'd drunk the nites only alcohol we went in: its an old *huge* monastery/church- school and the dancefloor was in the old chappel which still has the murals on the ceiling. Well, the police had found the venue before we arrived and so for the first hour the rumour was that they were about to close it down. Well, luckily the rumour was wrong - they must've been in a good mood. The atmosphere was electric. The music was a bit too hard and there were a few too many people and there were no gents toilets but the feeling was *so* good that nobody cared. Gorgeous nite - and free! The usual after-hour in Chatanooga was extended until 17:00 and was as usual brilliant with DJs Sdrici and Rokis playing old favourites to keep us going. After that it was on to private after-after-hour parties all over the city! All in all brilliant. x andE - Vienna, Austria / 9th Jan.95 Magic Kingdom ============= Name; Magic Kingdom Where; Kasino Kursaal, Interlaken, Switzerland When; Sat. 17th December 94 Organisation; Xtatic When the flyer has been released, a big buzz around this event has grown (the event was sold out a few days before). The photos of the place and the rooms printed on the flyer, the line-up and the name of the organisator: Xtatic, the best Swiss rave promotor (the one which has organised the Energy raves etc.) has proved this rave would be one of the best of the year. In facts, this place can only be used once a year for such events. Here in Switzerland, we don't have a lot of top dj's, but, thanks to some top promotors, we have a lot of international dj's and lives playing at our raves. The line-up of this rave, to name a few, include the UK dj's Carl Cox, Christian Vogel, Luke Slater, Alex Paterson, the Germans Jens Malstedt, Steve Mason, the Dutch gabber dj Gizmo and the US dj Damon Wild (Felix da housecat was on the flyer but he didn't come). A friend of mine and I have travelled about 2h30 to join at 11.30pm the little town of Interlaken in the middle of the well-known Swiss mountains. It wasn't hard to find the place (right near a beautiful 5 stars Hotel) but a lot of cars from all the country (and also from Germany, Italy and France) were parked on the roads. The Kasino Kursaal is an 200 year old castle-building and I was quite excited to get in to discover the 4 dancefloors - 3 techno rooms and a chill-out. We got into the venue very quickly, no queue! - it seems there was a big queue around 8pm, because a lot of people came early to buy the last tickets at the door - and the security was efficient and polite. What a venue !! The main room was big and luxurious (there were some great big chandeliers). A giant screen on the stage was displaying some nice pictures and some lasers were doing nice things. The room was quite full of ravers moving on the sounds of good techno provided by Gangsta, one of the most famous Swiss dj (he played at Mayday). I had to put my jacket in the cloak-room so I changed room. I arrived in the 'ballroom'. Luke Slater were playing there. I had already heard him djing once at Energy 94 and he didn't convince me, but this time, he played some amazing acid techno tunes, some that I have never heard. After greeting some friends there, I moved again to the 'Theater- hall'. Another Swiss dj called Mas Ricardo was playing techno there. This room was the biggest, it was also more modern. No luxury in this one. Then I finally managed to find the cloak-room but it was already full! So, I came back to the ballroom. Luke Slater was always playing great acid techno tunes till 2am. At 0.30am I moved to the main room because Aurora Borealis was doing a live P.A. there. I don't like a lot his tunes: I find them too 'commercial', but a lot of ravers like him, so I thought the ambiance would be great... and I was right. When he started, everybody were shouting and moving like mads ! 15 minutes after, I moved the the 'Theater-hall' where Damon Wild started at 1am. I have never heard Damon as a dj, but I know his tunes and he's quite a great acid producer on his label Sinewaves N.Y. So I thought he would play an amazing set. It seemed he was very stressed and anxious when he started. For me, it was a desillusion. He has played some slow acid tunes that haven't pleased the people. The lot of people in this hall wanted to move on kicking tune at this early hour and he only bringed 125bpm-like tunes... So, I waited 15 minutes to see if he'll change the style, but he hadn't. I left and went to see Carl Cox in the main room. I think he don't plays the best techno when he mixes at big events in front of thousand ravers. It was too 'commercial' for me, so I returned to the ballroom to hear the last 30min. of Slater's set. Then came Christian Vogel. He's famous as producer but I think he plays some bad tunes and he has a bad mixing technique, but now, it's like a trend to ask to some producers to dj at events. At 3.30am, in the main-room, a Scottish live-act, 'Q-Tex' were playing (they have played at the last Mayday). I expected some 'commercial' techno and I was right. They played the usual techno style that Westbam or other (too) famous German dj's play. But something has let me laught a lot. They were all (they are 3) moving their hands on their synthetisers, but some synthetisers hadn't electricity !! Hmmm... they are really laughing at ravers! After this stupid set, Carl Cox was playing in the Ball- room, so I went there. He played some great hard-house music and that was perfect. A lot of people were standing around Carl to look at his excellent mixing technique. When he has finished, I moved again to the main-room to check out Tofke, the 'new Belgium dj-star' as written on the flyer. He didn't impress me at all: he played some good techno tunes followed by some bad ones, and his mixing technique is really bad because he stops a tune at its edge and then put all the intro of the following one ! I left the party at 6.30am. This event was great and so has found the (about 7000) ravers who attended it. The place is unbelievable and the only thing I could say is 'When is the next there?' ! Respects to Luke Slater, Carl Cox, Xtatic and the Geneva Posse! psyched - Geneva, Switzerland / 28th Dec.94 Le Bal : New Year's Eve in Switzerland ====================================== Name; Le BAL - New Years Eve Party Where; Palais de Baulieu, Lausannes, Switzerland When; 31st December 1994 No great parties in Germany and the Dreamscape 7 rave held in Zuerich was far and too gabber (but big: 10000 ravers), so, I decided to go to 'Le Bal' (that means 'the ball') which has been announced to be a big event, one of the biggest in Europe for the night. No especially good music there (a few good dj's only). I wanted to go there because big parties in the French part of Switzerland aren't organised since 1.5 year anymore, and I wanted to see if I could find the great atmosphere I found in the parties some years ago (in this part of Switzerland). This event has been over-hyped by all the media: the news of the principal tv channel, many newspapers, radio stations, etc... with a lot of articles saying 'it will be the best, the biggest NYE party in Europe, etc..' and such things. The particularity of this event is that it wasn't only a dance-party but also a kind of fashionable party with 'stars' announced such as male top model Cameron, Dave Stewart and many others. This kind of things don't interest me at all but the medias used this to increase the hype. Another particularity of this event was the place. The place is a kind of big multi-hall exhibition center (for a total of 18000m2 of dance-floors) and each hall has a special music and a special decoration. They have also over-hyped the event about decoration: the guy who was doing it was Thierry Dreyfus, the guy who organises and decorates Galliano's and J-P Gaultier's fashion shows ! But let's talk about the line-up... on the flyer a big space was used to write 'LE BAL presents the legends unified Frankie Knuckles, David Morales. Can you afford to miss this great opportunity of entertainement!' So, as you see, house and garage are the main house music styles played in this part of Switzerland. Line-up: - Underground Garage room: Don Carlos/Milano, Dj Pierre/NY, David Morales/NY, Frankie Knuckles/NY, Terry Hunter/Chicago, and a few Swiss garage dj's. - House Progressive Room: Erik Rug/Paris, Lumukanda (live)/ Australia, Frank De Wulf/Belgium, Jamez/Amsterdam, Derrick May/Detroit, Willow/Switzerland. - Sounds of London room: the 808 state crew djing and 3 dj's from kiss fm (manchester). - Techno trance room: Dj D/London, Eddy De Clercq/Amsterdam, Dave Clarke/UK, Robert Armani/Chicago (wasn't there), Robert Hood/Detroit, Miss Djax/Holland, Acid Junkies (live)/ Holland, CJ Bolland/Belgium. - Chill-out room: live performance from Solar Quest. And a live from the shit-commercial pop-star Reel 2 Real was planned, but they have missed their airplane :-) There was also a room with brazilian music and a live there. Some dj's (Morales + Knuckles) have been paid around 10000 US$ with airplane and 5* hotel ! That is real fucking shit business ! The organisation of the night (I mean for the dj's) was really bad. Nobody to bring Miss Djax + Acid Junkies from Geneva to Lausannes (a friend of mine had to do it :) and in facts 3 different organisations have booked their own stuff, so, there weren't any coordination between them and each one was in charge of their 'own' dj's only. That's a little bit shit for a budget of 1 million Swiss francs!! Also, the schedule was quite shitty. The people who have write it really suck! They have planned that Acid Junkies would do a live for 1.5 hour !!!! What have they smoked? Do they know about techno ? I don't think so. They have also planned Dave Clarke at the opening: 7pm !!!! Quite crazy! I arrived at 11.15pm with some mates and there were a lot of people queuing. A little queue, but very packed! The security was really shit. After 30min we finally managed to get it and run directly to the techno room. We bought a bottle of champaign (not offered !) and made the wishes at 0am. I expected (after a bad party last year) that this year, people would stop dancing at 0am, the music would stop and everybody would open the champaign and make the wishes to everybody. But NOT! The ambiance was a little bit cold at this hour, strange. That was a deception. The dj at this moment, Eddy de Clercq, has just stopped the music 2 seconds at 0.10am and said 'happy New Year'. But without conviction and atmosphere :-( (Arghh. when I hear the '93 New Years Eve Dreamscape party in UK tapes, I can just say that they know what's a NYE is. But here, it seems not). Anyway, Eddy De Clercq was playing some kind of usual trance so we left at 0.30am to visit the very big center... Not all the rooms have the same size. The techno, garage, house and brazilian rooms were of course the biggest and were approx. equal-sized (About 4000m2 each with a ceiling at about 5m). The sounds of London and Chill-Out rooms were kind of little (I didn't found the Chill-Out!) The house room had a big hole at its center (therefore, one could also go upstairs to listen to the music) and a stage at aprox 3.5 meter up of the crowd. The dj was mixing there and some dancers were on a big circular platform. The dancers were dragqueens (Should I say gays? :-) and a few babes too. A fountain in a corner of the room provided a nice visual effect. The music there was a kind of shit Italian 'progressive' (regressive? :-) house. I don't like it at all so, I moved again. The garage room was the most packed at this hour (but in facts all the rooms were packed, excepted the techno room and the brazilian room). The decoration was nice there. Some little colored fountains were on some 3m height colums and on a dance-platform, there was a big cage (lent by the circus) with the VIP in it. But, anyway, I hate this garage sounds. I returned at 1am in the techno room. Acid Junkies were already playing. The sound was crap. I couldn't hear their nice 303 sounds, but almost only the bass :-( The newspapers had written before the event that the techno room would be decorated with a lot of mirrors and some great laser show. I was a little bit disapointed when I saw that the mirrors were only some aluminium sheets placed on the ceiling. And the lasers were just 2 crapy ones ... :-( This was the worst decorated room :-( Then came Miss Djax. She played a few good tunes, but the major part of her tracks weren't very good. I expected much better from her ! She played a long set (she replaced Robert Armani). While she was playing I visited all the building again. A lot of people coming from France, Italy attended the event. There were also many of so-called 'dragqueens'. Well, Lausannes is the city of tolerance in Switzerland, and a lot of gay parties have been organised there (the club called MaD has organised some gay parties with top dj's and clubbers coming from all Europe some years ago). I heard that a lot of regular visitors of the Parisian gay club 'Queen' attended the party (almost all VIP's were gays/ dragqueens, because of the organisators). It was fun yes! (but I haven't seen any dragqueen in the techno room :-) Anyway, I arrived in the little room of the Sound of London. There was a big screen showing some old car races and the people danced on a big orange-fluorescent fitted carpet. A guy of the 808 state crew was djing. I thought I could hear some Jungle (I love it!) or some UK techno sounds, but I still wonder why it was called 'Sounds of London' ?!?! He was playing some kind of acid-jazz-rap !! Sounds of shit yeah! I returned to the techno-room. CJ Bolland has started. Weird, the sound was much better. And he started with some techno-trance tunes that sounded ok to me. I know that Bolland is very irregular. He can play some really great stuff one day, and the day after some crap. Well, at 4am, 1 hour before they close the center, he started playing some real good music! With tunes like the old Source and some in the Sinewave style! This was the best set of the night, I think. 5.15am... now the lights are on, and people have to live the place. Numerous after-hours were organised, but my friends and I thought they weren't worth to go to. So, we left for Geneva and stoped near the motorway to eat a breakfast in a motel. And then, I went back home at 8.30am ... This was not the New Years Eve party I expected. People weren't enough 'hot' for the midnight counting. So, the party seemed to be like all other party and didn't have the little 'NYE stamp' :-) And I think that for people that are seriously into the music, the quality provided wasn't great enough. But anyway, only 20% of the people were seriously into the music :-) Maybe next year it will be better, when I'll escape from Switzerland (eheh, England is the place to be! ;-) psyched - Geneva, Switzerland / 10.1.94 Ravelation New Year's Eve Party =============================== Name; Ravelation New Years Eve Party Where; Wembley Complex, London, England When; 31st December 94 I arrived at the Wembley Complex at about 7.30pm to be greeted with a phenominal queue stretching back about 1 mile! Luckily women were called to the front so my total queuing time was a mere 10 mins compared to the most which was about 2 hours! The Security had a nice and safe attitude (for a change) and the searching was undertaken professionally and efficiently. As soon as I stepped into the house room, I could feel the atmosphere and I knew that I had made the right choice. Cloakroom facilities were fantastic (I wondered where they were going to store 10,000 coats!) they had another exhibition hall just for the purpose 8-) - full marks for organisation! Peter Davis had just begun his 1 hour set to an admiring crowd although he did have a few problems with the needle jumping - even when he was standing away from the decks, the records were jumping but the crowd didn't care and whistles blew to show their respect. As with all raves, merchandise stalls were scattered around both arenas selling jackets, tapes and everything else you could possibly imagine and the bars were sellling water, coca cola and fizzy orange all at a reasonable price of L1.50. I must congratulate Wembley for supplying water points though - it is a well known fact that most ravers die from heat exhaustion and dehydration because water has been turned off and is being sold at L2.00 a bottle but here you could just fill up whenever you needed (with a minimal queue of course!). The atmosphere in both rooms was on top form with whistles and horns to be heard from outside, as I stepped into the main room DJ Rap was just handing over to DJ Devious Dee and the reaction was phenominal, he knew exactly what he needed to do - starting with the full on piano tune, the whole hall came alive with hands being thrown in the air and whistles permanently being blown with appreciation. My respect goes out to all the DJ's of the night but my favourites had to be Dougal, Vibes and Devious Dee in the main room and Steve Jackson and Pete Wardman in the house room. Well, the time was nearing midnight and the atmosphere was rising, it was hard to choose where to see the new year in but I settled for the house room as there was more room in there at the front! With 10 seconds to go we had a countdown and saw the new year in with Steve Jackson playing Baby D and Let me be your fantasy...what more can I say, that tune is a real stomach turner - all the hairs stood up on the back of my neck and I knew it was going to be a good year! But that was not it - as I turned around to wish my friend a Happy New Year there was a huge explosion from the stage and fireworks shot up in the air with explosions of fire and streamers falling from the ceiling on top of all the ravers! It brought tears to my eyes because I was so happy! What a way to see the new year in - they couldn't of done anything else to make it better. As the night progressed, the tunes kept pumpin out and everyone was a corker - in the 9 hours that I was there, they did not play one bad tune. To conclude a blinder of a night, the sound system was of high quality and with a light show to match. I didn't see any trouble all night and there were plenty of security and paramedics accessible at all times during the night. I must congratulate Ravelation and all the people involved with organising this event because I have been raving for nearly 6 years now and this is definately one of the best raves I have ever been to - Respect to the Ravelation Crew. Believe me - Don't miss the next one! Shouts out to Sue, Maria, Danny, Sean and all the DJ's on the night especially DJ Dougal - Paul I love you! and DJ Vibes. Also shouts out to all the Happy Smiling Faces out there - Respect! To all of you ravers reading this Have a Happy 1995. Paula Symmons - London, England / 18th Jan. 95 Hysteria - Pure X ================= Name; Hysteria - Pure X Where; The Sanctuary, Milton Keynes When; 21st January 1995 8pm - 8am As I arrived at the Sanctuary I could see the crowd building up by the minute so I rushed up to join the queue as soon as possible. To my delight - this was the male queue so I was directed down to the girls queue which was only about 20 people long! within 30 mins I had been searched and was inside the venue - not bad going! I have started to wonder why they don't employ more men to carry out searches and less for women because we always get in first - I mean I am not complaining but it isn't really fair. On entering the venue, the first thing I noticed was the fact that not a lot of people were dancing - just standing around, the time was now 9.40 and I thought the place would have been rocking? Anyway first things first, time to put our coats in...what a nightmare! we queued for over an hour! and when we finally reached the cloakroom, we found one cloakroom attendant, now that is not organisation. This was not a good start to the night, so we preceded down to the main room to hear the end of DJ Raps set, her choice of Vinyl was good but the sound system let her and the other DJ's on the night down - they were drowned out by too much bass and the quality was terrible, I don't think I have heard a sound system this bad before. I don't know what the tapes are going to be like from this event but I don't think they will be worth buying. Unfortunately, the lights and lasers matched the quality of the sound system. The backdrops were tacky sheets with flowers being projected onto them and I think I saw one or two lasers all night! - this was definately a budget event. Not being a Jungle fan I was starting to get sick of the same records being played and couldn't wait for DJ Sy to come on and change the scene a bit but to my disappointment he changed his set and played Drum and Bass..? The Jungle DJ's did themselves proud though with high quality DJing and mixing banging out of those speakers - shame the system didn't do the tunes justice. I decided to wait for DJ Vibes set and made my way upstairs. I couldn't have called this a chill out room, the music was as hard as it was downstairs and the steam was rising off all the bodies over the floor. I managed to find a seat and had a rest for a couple of hours and a chat with a few people, the feelings were mutual - there was something missing from this event. The main problem was the atmosphere - there wasn't one, everyone was in little groups and there was no spark rising from the crowd at all - well not until DJ Vibes came on! He started his set with his and Dougals +Better Day+ track and I haven't seen such a transformation in atmosphere, literally all the hardcore jungalists took a step back and the hardcore crew came through (this proved to me just how much the scene has split up). Vibes rocked the venue and every track was a corker - he really made the night for me, saved me from going mad! and for the first time in the night - I heard a whistle music to my ears, someone was showing their appreciation, the hour flew past and before I knew it, DJ Hype had taken the decks and the mood changed again. The Mc's were also a disappointment tonight as none of them made a real effort to hype up the crowd except for Magika - respect to you for having a go! It was now 4am and time for the DJ Dougal, all I can say is absolutely wicked! he started his set with the space 2001 tune and the crowd went mad!! all the whistles and horns were sounding and they nearly took the roof off - this was what raving is all about. Definately the best DJ of the night for me. About half way through, we had a guest appearance from one of our morning programmes keep fit instructors - Mr Motivator, what a load of rubbish! all he kept saying was Wicked Wicked and then he started waving and shouting at Dougal - don't people realise that DJ's need to concentrate? Dougal ignored him though and carried on with his set - soon he was gone. Thanks Paul for another +wicked+ set!! I eventually I couldn't take the atmosphere in there anymore and left at 6am after Grooverider was announced and I literally got pushed over by the jungle enthusiasts coming through - what went wrong? the drugs? Overall, this event was a total disappointment and not worth the L15 we paid for our tickets. Shouts out to all the DJ's and MC's on the night especially Dougal and Vibes and Magika, also to Maria, Sue and Sherris (who found me a chair to chill out on!) - Nice one! They are putting those symbols at the end of the review so you know excactly what you may expect from the record. In other mags they say 'Acid', 'Trance' or whatever, you don't really have an idea of what you may expect there. * It's for free -=- Bad Points -=- * Can't find any really... :) -=- Score -=- * Rave-Reviews [********..] * Cd & Record-Reviews [**********] * News [*********.] * Interviews [*********.] * Charts [**********] * Ads for upcoming Raves [**********] * Design / Lay-out [**********] * Overall [*********.] The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 6th Mar.95 Zine Name; Mixmag ================= Country; England This is not really a rave zine but more a dance zine. As we entered the club, I heard the MC announce DJ Ramos and ran inside - I didn't want to miss this one! As usual Ramos played to the crowd although there was not a huge amount of people in the club at this time, he knew where he was coming from and soon filled the dance floor! respect to Ramos for a good set and generally having a good time while he's DJing - that's how it should be. Dougal followed Ramos and he really did pack out the dance floor, I don't know where all the extra people suddenly appeared from! Dougal played a completely new set with a bit more hardcore techno than normal and although I didn't appreciate this as much as his usual style, the crowd seemed to enjoy it. My night was made when the next DJ was announced - DJ Vibes, this man can do no wrong, he also played a new set but incorporated into that a few of the old faves and really got the crowd pleading for more! he was asked for rewinds and obliged without any delay and really played what the crowd wanted to hear - nice one Shane! The atmosphere by this time (1pm) was electric and everyone was really in the mood, there was definately no attitude in there and I got to know a lot of really great people that night. The lasers were amazing for such a small club and the strobe was only flashed on and off occasionally when it was really needed, the smoke machine wasn't constantly on choking everyone to death and was ideally placed higher up than normal - this all came together to make it a really top night especially for the bargain price of L4!! The next DJ was not actually scheduled to play on the night - DJ Pigbag (a real blast from the past for me!) - he played a very mixed set comprising of happy hardcore but also drum and bass and techno. I couldn't get into this at all and you could feel the disappointment in the crowd. DJ Haze was next to take to the decks, a resident DJ I believe and a very good one too! the happy vibe was bought alive again and the crowd hyped up again with all the recent tunes pumpin out of the 10K sound system. Another bonus to this club are the MC's - they are amazing! MC Sharkey is my fave who sits on the decks and talks about Humpty Dumpty going insane! also MC Smiley and MC Knight are regulars here and boy do they get the crowd going - who says the big names are always the best - these lads get my vote 10/10. I couldn+t believe that this crowd was still on such a high! as Haze passed onto Lomas the music became more hardcore techno than anything else and the steam really did start rising as each raver pushed themselves to the limit for this hour! The time was now approaching 5am (the last hour) and I wasn't quite sure who was left to play until I heard the MC announce Vinylgroover! You couldn't have chosen a better DJ to play the last hour and as he arrived the crowd went absolutely wild and the dance floor was immediately stormed - where did all these people come from?! as usual he was on top form mixing and scratching all the latest happy vinyl sounds to a very appreciative crowd - anyone who was sitting down was most definately standing up now - the music was on top of this world! This man should have played a longer set - the hour just didn't seem enough to appreciate his talent on the decks. As the last record was announced the dancefloor bustled and all the whistles, horns and claps of delight filled the room - this had been another corker of a night from the Rhythm Station. My respect goes out to all the organisers and security at this event and especially all the DJ's and MC's that made it another night to remember - I just can't wait until next Friday to hear the line up again for Hardcore Heaven V - it cannot be beaten for that Happy Hardcore Vibe! For the ones who don't know 'Autechre' their style is really difficult to discribe but I should describe it as 'Experimental Trance' other ones maybe are gonna say 'Experimental Trance? Hey lamer this is ambient!' but I think it's to experimental to call it 'just' ambient, they really got an own style which is really unique. I think you maybe can compare them a bit with 'The Aphex Twin' and 'Future Sound Of London'. 11 songs are on it, Foil / Montreal / Silverside / Slip / Glitch / Piezo / Nine / Further / Yulquen / Nil and TearTear All songs are in the same style (except 'Nine', 'Further' and 'Yulquen' which are pure ambient tunes) all the rest is 'Autechre' style. The last song from the album 'TearTear' is really beatiful, listen to it! * 7/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Jan.95 Album Title; Classics --------------------- Artist; The Aphex Twin Label; R&S Records (RS 95035 CD) Style; Hardtrance / Experimental Tracklist Digeridoo / Flaphead / Phloam / Isopropanol / Polynomial-C / Tamphex (Hedphuq Mix) / Phlange Phace / Dodeccaheedron / Analogue Bubblebath 1 / Metapharstic / We Have Arrived (Aphex Twin QQT Mix) / We Have Arrived (Aphex Twin TTQ Mix)/ Digeridoo (Live In Cornwall 1990) I think I don't have to introduce The Aphex Twin / Richard D. James :) Like you can see 'Classics' is a compilation from their biggest hits ever (though, I miss 'On' here). The compilation includes really old work like the awesome track 'Metapharstic' (a tune which you can only find on the mayday compilation) but also some newer tunes like 'Polynomial-C'. A VERY good idea of R&S Records to release this one, it's brilliant, BUY IT! 9/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium Album Title; ISDN ----------------- Artist; (F)uture (S)ound (O)f (L)ondon Label; Virgin Style; Experimental / Ambient The second album from FSOL this year, 15 songs this time on the album, Just A Fucing Idiot / The Far Out Son Of Lung And The Ramblings Of A Madman / Appendage / Slider / Smoking Japanese Babe / You're Creeping Me Out / Eyes Pop - Skin Explodes - Everybody Dead / It's My Mind That Works / Dirty Shadows / Tired / Egypt / Are They Fighting Us / Hot Knives / A Study Of Six Guitars and An End Of Sorts. After the brilliant 'Lifeforms' finally 'ISDN' is here. This time they are taking a whole new direction, from Ambient to Jazzid Grooves, to put it in other words the style is TOTALLY different than the style from 'Lifeforms'. But I think every experimental freak should check this out and for the FSOL freaks, buy it, you must have this in your collection. It's a collectors-item and by the way, the cd looks GREAT :) * 8.5/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Jan.95 BReaKBeaT <<<>>> EP Title; 11:55 --------------- Artists; Roni Size & DJ Die Label; Full Cycle More smooth jazz bizzness for all you cats out there! Cool jazz-man vocalled '11:55' samples over various city/ traffic noises, while the obvious strains of the music box-ish jazz bleeps build up - good solid steppers beats, with an assortment of sax, music box and harp sounds play away in the mix. A nice rolling bassline adds to the feel of the track, even if this is really an update of last years "Music Box"...pure class, as always! The flipside remix uses more phat steppers beats n bass, and less of a jazz thing...again, similar to the stripped beats of the music box remix...possibly formulaeic, but I don't care - and with the hype surrounding Roni Size and the Bristol flava, buy yourself a piece of instant cool - a lovely mellow tune. Rick - Leeds, England / 25th Feb.95 EP Title; A statement of rhythms e.p. ------------------------------------- Artist; Rhythm For Reasons Label; Formation A1: the love statement AA1:the smokers rhythm AA2:sweet memories sometimes i really wish that formation releases would be more consistant; it seems that a lot of records i hear from the label have one really good track that has to share vinyl space with some really weak ones. this record fits that description completely; in this case, the cool track is "smokers rhythm", which has a great new drumbeat in the style of the "roasted rollin mix" of "renegade snares". as for the rest, "the love statement" rehashes the female vocal from dj taktix's "the way" and d'cruze's "lonely"over some fairly annoying formation-issue bleepy synths. also, the vocals on this track seem to be on a different plane than the rest of the track, as if they were tacked on. "sweet memories" is an absolutly horrid 4-on-the-floor track that sounds like it was made in early 92 or so....total cheese. SCORE: 4.5/10 Jason/method one, Richmond - USA / 6th Jan.95 EP Title; Babylon Shall Fall ---------------------------- Artist; Splash Label; DeeJay Long Long Long time coming, first time I heard this it blew my mind, and I've been after it ever since - the definition of hardstep, without doubt...space age strings over a light steppers break soon collide with well programmed hard breaks and treated 'all o'the yout shall witness da day that babylon shall f-a-l-l' vocals, dropping into a bassline to die for...the bass changes, the strings come and go...this is THE tune on dub of last year...pisses on everything... search for a copy, and send it straight to the all-time classics box...remixes are in the pipeline at the moment from the Rider, Trace and several other big-names (I suggested Hype, but there's no confirmation yet...) Rick - Leeds, England / 9th Mar.95 EP Title; Big Bang/No Boundaries (Remixes) ------------------------------------------ Artist; Flatliner Label; Ram (Promo) I assume both are remixed by Ant Miles & DJ Flatliner, as there are no specific mix titles on the label. "Big Bang" has stop-start metallic drums, with a heavy bass bubbling along the intro - swaying into a very funky drum loop - treated so it moves in and out of the mix. This soon drops into a massive slab of hardstep, with the original mix's hard drums chopped, timestretched, overlayed etc. Maintaining the original vocal samples, and using (as you'd expect from an Ant Miles release) some superb bass-effects - but when the string break drops in, yes yes yes, this is a tune. This 12 deserved a remix and oh-my-gosh, it has arrived - major lick back. "No Boundaries" didn't receive too much attention when released back in the early Summer, due to the A-side's drum power, hopefully this should change with a very smooth Red One-style stepper - keeping the distinctive Orb-sampling water sample of the original (although it sounds like you're playing the 12 at the wrong speed...hehe). If you're into Ant Miles' amazing bassline creating ability this will keep you happy for months...nice one! Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Feb.95 EP Title; Burial ---------------- Artist; Leviticus Label; Philly Blunt/FFRR I'm not going to advocate the re-releasing of this (or any other big track) tune, but when I'm offered a remix by Roni Siz, Krust & Dillinja, and Nookie and Ray Keith - I'm not going to snub it...anyone who hasn't got this will find it extremely good value (especially since HMV et al are bound to do a Dred Bass with it, and sell it for 2 quid...), 4 mixes in total, the two original chronics (including the awful flipside 'first you say yes...' remix), and the aforementioned remixes... Size et al, do a great job in beefing the bass up, and after the slightly obvious (and extremely famous) stringed intro, it gets a bit less obvious... still very much a ladies mix in its outlook, pretty mellow with creative drum patterns and punchy bass - personally I can't see this getting played much, due to not using a constant vocal onslaught as the original did... As you'd expect from the Nookie/Ray Keith partnership this is a ruffed up mix. Again the same intro is employed, but good separation of the 'ooooh, oooh, ohhh's drops into a solid, and much faster remix...heavy breaks merge into stepping rhythms, and (unfortunately) the 'first you say yes...' vocals, and back to the hard style again...its a bit of a chop and change affair, but it'll keep interest in this track for another 8 months or so (...great) Rick - Leeds, England / 25th Feb.95 EP Title; Burning / Travelling ------------------------------ Artist; Dope Label; Rgged Vinyl #13 Nice One! Moody intro, very musical in its build up - expecting a trademark GLR tune, but Hey! Hey! Hey! after the step comes the jump up! Absolutely massive in the area, even though its our old friend dred bass supplying the farty bassline, its a tearin tune...The flipside is a remix of the tune they released on the flip of the GLR release, but a bit harder in its outlook, definately worth the wedge... Rick - Leeds, England / 15th Feb.95 EP Title; Calm Before The Storm ------------------------------- Artists; Brown & Dangerman Label; Mobhanded #1 A very strange and innovative A-side on this one, creative bongo and what sounds like old James Brown drums giving it a live-sound, if kinda hectic in a freeform jazz type way... pure building drums throughout, with a good complementary bass. Very slowly strings are added into the mix, making it a very strange trip - with the close being the addition of slow piano riffs... possibly too strange for dancefloors, so play will be very surprising, but a good tune for those with big balls... The flip begins with dark moody strings and similar jazzy drums, with the b-line leading the tune, the drums get heavier and the odd chipmunk vocal sample...not as weird as the A-side, appreciators of good tunes, and the adventurous would be advised to check this out... Rick - Leeds, England / 25th Feb.95 EP Title; Champion DJ --------------------- Artist; Blackstar & Topcat At last, nuff rewinds in the dance, I think its probably the Rebel on the mix, but I've got no label - certainly sounds like it...this has been forthcoming since way back last year, so anyone whos been out will know it - Topcats superb vocals, gunshots, lighters, bleeps, bit of kunta - lovely, easily the best 'big ragga artist' tune yet (with their consent)....lovers of the ragga flava must get this... Rick - Leeds, England / 16th Feb.95 EP Title; Chronicles In Dub --------------------------- Artist; Steve Gurley Label; Tone Def #22 Comes as an etched 1-sided disc, limited to only 1000 copies (apparently), gentle breaks, and a distinctive riff break down thru 'can you feel it' vocals, to a highly chopped, if somewhat sparse drummed stepper - a helluva lot is going down throughout the track, smooth strings & bleeps, sung female vocals and above all the distinctive riff&bass - dropping out mid-way with a metallic hip-hop drummed loop. heading into bleep territory towards the end of the track. Its a long, experimental track - that is well worth your money, and if the ltd to 1000 copies is true, then it could be pretty collectable. Comes as a taster for the forthcoming album. Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Mar.95 Artist; Cloud 9 --------------- Label; Movin Shadow #56 (Promo) Gavin returns to form on MS, after the dissappointing 'Blissful Ignorance' Emotional pianos intro this tune, adding drums that could see this turning into a GLR-style roller, but...hold on...its a heavy hardstep lick (a la Omni Trio's 'Together' - except having a sad rather than happy vibe to it...) - you get the picture, hard drum patterns, the odd stepping break, smooth string drops - and when the pianos join the mix - oh yes! One of the best tunes of the year, without doubt...whips the whole of his forthcoming Nookie album (except maybe the two tracks on Side D). The flipside opts for a Metalheads style jazzy roller, with a really nice uplifting Summer vibe (lets hope it hits the shelves properly before then, eh....) - both tunes are strictly for the inta, and are the absolute dogs bollocks... Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Feb.95 EP Title; Daybreak/Religion --------------------------- Artists; Formula 7 & Ray Keith Label; Quayside A: religion (ray keith remix) B: daybreak (formula 7) a very nice effort from formula 7, with a little help from Ray Keith in the mix. "religion" starts off with some m.l. king samples ("i have a dream"), a jazzy loop, and a really easy beat - it gradually builds up to the ray-kieth-standard amen and a harder feel. nice. "daybreak" is a much simpler drum n bass track, though it does have a good string intro. SCORE: 7.5/10 Jason/method one - Richmond, USA / 8th Jan.95 EP Title; Deep Jungle --------------------- Label; cat number DAT001 not sure who this is, is it Adam F??? anyway, black label with the Deep Jungle logo on - one side is smooth, sweet stepping music, very much a Bukem tune for all fans of his style (with a ragga-ish bassline) - but the flipside is the one for me, heavy ragga flava vocals, hard stepping drums, aaaah yes, keep this one wound tight....definately get this one... Rick - Leeds, England / 16th Feb.95 EP Title; Dream Finder ---------------------- Artist; Blame Label; Movin Shadow Four tracks of varying styles (and quality), but on the whole a worthy purchase, the lead track has spooky strings and vocoder vocals, before a crazy bouncy bassline drops over a rolling rhythm - real head-nodding stuff - echoing voices all over the mix and sweeping strings - trouble is the mix is a bit crowded due to the variation of the tune, chopping and changing all over the place - not really a crowd pleasing tune...next up is a mix of the classic 'Music Takes You', all Inta-ed up with rollin drums and swooping strings, unfortunately it just wasn't a roller, it was a full-on white gloves hands-in-the-air tune...not one for 95 style remixes...so I'll give it a miss, it just doesn't sound right (buy the original, its still easily available...). Flip over, and yep, thats what its about - very smooth rolling drums and light house-influenced keyboard stabs, with breathed female vocals - nice and mellow, and an absolute corker of a track... The final track goes a bit mad on the old drums, after the previous track it didn't really make an impression, so you've got 3 average fillers and one dogs bollocks, value for money if you ask me... Rick - Leeds, England / 9th Mar.95 EP Title; Dubplate Style / Jump Up ---------------------------------- Artist; Marvellous Cain Label; Suburban Base #47 Rolling breaks, ass winding basslines & junglist sirens precede this manic lick back - harder beats & Daddy Freddys chatting make this a definate must for all lovers of rewinds. There's not too much to it, a few samples & string breaks, but it is executed well, check it. The flipside shows a heavy dub influence, pretty mellow (in comparison), rolling along with the best of them - string breakdowns, vocals samples and good ol'stepping rhythms - nice 10"... Rick - Leeds, England / 15th Feb.95 EP Title; Feel Good 95 / London Step ------------------------------------ Artist; Omni Trio Label; Movin Shadow 32R2 Thanks to the remix doublepack - sorry, 'new album', this tune has been given a new lease of life...rather than including this on the album, they used the almost 2 year old original - which sounded stale compared to the other tunes... but anyway, the Movin Shadow cash machine adds extra strings, junglist basslinnes and harder chopped drums - its just the original with 95 flava...not really worth getting...the flipside is better, a hefty steppers bass, but more than a nod to other Omni Trio stuff makes it sound a tad boring...thumbs down boys, the worst release on MS in a long, long time... Rick - Leeds, England / 15th Feb.95 Title; Fire (Urban Shakedown,Rogue Unit & Nasty Jungle Mix) ----------------------------------------------------------- Artist; Prizna & Demolition Man Label; Labello Blanco #18 Ah yes, thats much better, go straight to Gavin & Finn's remix, the pick of the 3 - and bound to sell due to the name anyway...not groundbreaking in any way, but there is tremendous energy in the mix - mainly due to the hyperspeed ragga chatting...all the tricks are in here, Dred Basslines, timestretching, phasing...its the shit - you cannot fail to wind yer waist to this....highly recommended. Rick - Leeds, England / 15th Feb.95 Label; Fluid Vinyl #1 --------------------- The A-Side starts nicely, despite using heavy slabs of cheese in the 'its a jungle out here' samples...stealing a lot of Size's stepping breaks to steadily build into an MC-led bassline stepper - pretty deep stuff, not an overly superb tune, just a demonstration of the current styles (the timestretch, the jazz, harsh MC samples...). The flipside is a whole lot better, ominous bass sound, usual MC samples, but very inventive treating of the main vocals ('badman reaching every day') - rolls along nicely with the vocals, that sound like they're sung through a kazoo in places... not essential, but worth checking out... Rick - Leeds, England / 25th Feb.95 EP Title; Fusion/Water Margin ----------------------------- Artist; Studio Pressure Label; Photek #4 A far cry from the hardstep of #1, this is pure jazziness - even if the drums are straight outta trumpton ('tis true..), they build up and up and in comes a scratchy jazz sample, a phat steppers rhythm drops and the riff gets funkier and funkier (getting pretty mad in some places) - yeah so jazz is the flava of the month, but its a wicked relaxing tune... more please! The flipside has a long stringed intro, with dripping water effects and similar bass effects to 'Presha 3' - very sparse throughout... This is better than #3 by the way... Rick - Leeds, England / 9th Mar.95 EP Title; Ganja Remixes 2 ------------------------- Artists; various Label; Ganja Records Ah yes, x-amount of niceness, wicked tunes - as you'd expect Andy C & Ant Miles emphasize the already heavy bass on 'Mash Up Da Place', timestretch here and there - basically similar effects to their othe remixes, absolutely wicked tune...Krome & Time do the bizzness for 'Tiger Style', chopped drums & samples (no surprises there), lighter calls etc etc, definately in the Tearin style - this plate is a must-have... Rick - Leeds, England / 16th Feb.95 EP Title; Hand Of The Dead Body (Possible 187 Mix) -------------------------------------------------- Artist; Scarface feat. Ice Cube Label; Noo Trybe I, along with many others, have been waiting for this to come down for a long long time - and (thankfully) its been worth the wait, the original track has been stripped down to a couple of vocal snatches from Scarface & Ice Cube and the g-funk break in the middle (the 'nigga don't believe that song...' female vocalled break). Goldie's mix uses the same jazzy drums that everyone seems to be using, fast & funky rolling breaks - breaking down to a jerky start-stop rhythm as Ice Cube lays down his rap...the g-funk break has been left in its original form (I guess to give the track identity...) before breaking into that old Goodfellas 'as far back...' sample (timestretched and slowed down at the same time)...nice chopped rhythms, top-notch rapping and big phat funky basslines...there's an instrumental stripped of all vocals and vocal samples on the flip, as well as 4 G-funked mixes (but all in radio friendly format unfortunately...). Shits all over the dire Cutty Ranks remix, this has been worth the wait...but still not mad enough for club play... Rick - Leeds, England / 28th Feb.95 EP Title; Hitman Remixes ------------------------ Artist; Marvellous Cain Label; IQ At last, long awaited, and still only at the promo stage - remixes from the Hype, Dreamteam (Bizzi B & Pugwash), Asend, and Marvellous Cain...No point going into detail, as most of you will know the original and/or the remixes from the dances... Outstanding mixes are the Dreamteams, with their ragga vocalled intro dropping into heavy heavy drums - a real rushing tune, and Hype's mix for the Hello Lover-ish bouncing bassline, a real arse winder indeed. Asend goes for a drum&bass treatment, with the same bass effects as used on SMR#2 (big fave for me, personally), and Marvellous Cain keeps with the original flava, but adds layers to the mix - absolutely essential for all the lighter crew out there...[even if the big names have stopped playing it...] Rick - Leeds, England / 9th Mar.95 EP Title; Horizons ------------------ Artist; LTJ Bukem Label; Looking Good The new offshoot of Good Looking, I heard that he intended this to be for house records (about 1 1/2 years ago this was...), but nope, its more of his amazingly innovative and timeless drum&bass...sorry...thats an insult, this is just music...smooth strings and pipe sounds, over a real jazzy vibe...this has been a classic since it was dubbed almost a year ago, well worth the wait, if you own anything by Bukem just buy this - its quality (even the techno boys and girls are snapping it up, something to do with the hype in the British press methinks....) Rick - Leeds, England / 9th Mar.95 EP Title; Horny Mutant Jazz --------------------------- Artist; T-Power Label; SOUR #19 A big buzz has surrounded this track, and it's definately worth it - hip-hop drummed intro, with gentle sax & piano riffs (and just a touch of old-skool electro), fading into a jazzy stepper (using a chopped 'sweet vibrations' loop) - the sax riff makes this an extremely distinctive track (even if they could've used a live sax, rather than what sounds like a casio...), deep sub-bass, lovely strings and well programmed drums - but all in all its a bit of a home- listener, superb stuff, but slightly leftfield. Flip over for a very smooth, almost film-suited intro, quite uplifting, but with a definate moody edge - chopped up helicopter drums and building strings are the order of the day - its just pure atmospheric emotion...essential 'intelligence'.... Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Mar.95 EP Title; Inner city life (remixes) Artist; Metalheads A: inner city life (roni size instant mix) B: inner city life (nookie remix) when "inner city life" first came out, i was disappointed. yes, it was a nice track, but it was also kind of boring. the remixes, on the other hand, are everything i hoped the original would be - they live up to the hype. Absolutely gorgeous, with both mixes capitalizing on the lush vocals and instrumentation (but yet remaining very danceable). my personal favorite of the two is the roni size mix, which seems to be continually evolving. the nookie mix is very good as well, though is sounds vaguely like omni trio. this is one of my favorite records at the moment. SCORE: 9.5/10 Jason/method one - Richmond, USA / 8th Jan.95 EP Titles; Intalektive Volumes 1, 2 & 3 --------------------------------------- Label; cat no INT001,INT002,INT003 No idea whos behind these, but they are 3 12s of superb jungle tinged hardstep getting more raggafied as the series continues - not too many ragga samples, but they've got the basslines, and that what counts...all straight to the Inta crew - heavy bass, and tuff beats...check Volume 2 for creative Splash sounding drum&bass and Volume 3 for a Hitmen style collision with Stamina and Dred Bass - absolutely fucking excellent...contact Lucky Spin to get them at the moment.... Rick - Leeds, England / 9th Mar.95 Label; IQ Records #7 (Promo) ---------------------------- The latest release from the Face records offshoot, no title or artist information, just a cat no. Heading into jungle territory, the A-side begins with sweet ragga vocals, helicopter stepping and low rumbling bass; this drops into extremely well programmed hard drum&bass - stepping bass- lines and an excellent funky hip-hop breakdown in the middle. Towards the end there is a big phat 70's guitar/ vocal sample - breaking up those drums, but its not long before they're back - joined by some heavy chatting (but its only an inch or so before the end of the track - could've done with the chatting earlier, but it gives a bit of variation to the track....). The flipside begins with some awful horn sounds, broken up by snatches of hardstep - this soon drops a farty bassline and repeated ragga chatting (memorable, but repeated almost throughout the track - so becoming a bit tiresome...),an average tune - not up to the standard of the A-side, but worth checking out. Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Feb.95 Compilation Title; Jungle Massive 3 - DJ Edition ------------------------------------------------ Everyone knows I hate compilations, but this is a pretty good pack, currently a promo to the forthcoming album, and worth getting if you want to play any of the tracks out and about (a louder pressing than the album)...8 decent tracks - new mixes of ganjaman, war 4 94, bass light - but the stars are danny breaks mix of the classic of long-time gone 'express yourself' by the Family Foundation, Undercover Agent's mix of Fire and a remix of Bukem's forthcoming track for Precious Materials...good stuff indeed... Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Mar.95 Album Title; Jus' a likkle sumting ---------------------------------- Artist; Tek 9 Label; Reinforced A1: the tek 9 reinterpretation of code 071's 'a london sumtin' 1991 some original urban jungle music B1: summer breeze B2: we're gettin' down C1: you can't do wrong D1: pushing back remix D2: pushing back Tek 9 ends '94 with this rather schitzo 6-track mini-album that manages to combine ruff jungle sounds, typical reinforced-style tracks, and, ah, some *really* bizarre bits and pieces. to start, they yank the sample from that old code 071 track and construct an entirely 1994 track around it - lots of interesting rhythms and some of the deepest bass i've heard recently. don't believe the "remix" tag, because this has absolutly nothing in common with the original save for that one tiny vocal sample. moving on, "summer breeze" and "you can't do wrong" are fairly dull and innoffensive tracks; not exactly inspiring. "we're getting down" is a hip hop instrumental in the style of the one on the "killing time remixes"; too bad it sounds like a really weak remix of "award tour" by a tribe called quest (both tracks use the same xylophone sample). the album ends with the "pushing back" original and remix, which are *really* bizarre.... while the remix is pure jungle with ragga samples galore, the original has live female vocals, a sax player, and (get this) NO DRUMS. that's right - none. what the hell?? i know they tend to go out on a muso limb now and again, but this is rediculous. SCORE: 5/10 jason/method one - Richmond, USA / 6th Jan.95 Label; Liquid Wax #95001 ------------------------ The first release for 95 - no info, but it definately comes correct, smooth intro strings and punchy stepping bass (similar to Tearin Vinyl 6AA, but much slower...) - organ stabs and big phat beats accompany it nicely, gradually building the mix up. Occaissional female moans and groans inject the mix. A class stepper's tune, but pretty minimal - so DJ-play is doubtful (unless you know the coup...). The flip isn't as head nodding as the A-Side, more arse winding, due to its 'Beat Booyaa'-ish bass treatment (cascading b-lines). Watery sounding tinkling intro with 'relax' vocals and similar solid drums to the A-Side and, on the 'intensify the treatment' sample dillinja-esque guitars join in and the bass drops. Samples of Mental Power's superb 'Unknown Intelligence' throughout for a good old rolling bleep effect...very good 12, one for the intelligent. Rick - Leeds, England / 25th Feb.95 EP Title; Melody Madness ------------------------ Artist; Cool Hand Flex Seems like the usual swing sampling roller, then an extremely distinctive thunderous bassline kicks in (bound to get it recognises), a helicopter lands which builds up into a good slab of London step, ideal for the jump up crew, coming back with the swing sample. check this, excellent stuff. The flip sees Flex reunited with MC Fats for a big dub-influenced work out, not quite 'Ya Buzzin', its very sparse - remember 'Legal Rights' from the 'Mercy Mercy' 12, well its like that, but more of a stepper.... Rick - Leeds, England / 15th Feb.95 EP Title; Non-Stop / Cool Operator ---------------------------------- Artist; Da Dogz Label; Prime Time Wax #2 Word is this is the second release from those that brought us the fabulous, if slightly over-played "Nice Tune" - but then again, the trainspotters amongst us will notice the catalogue number differences...This is an absolute tearer, sold out almost as soon as it was delievered yesterday... if you've been out you will almost definately have heard the A-side, a very smooth and mellow techno style intro - all bleeps, echoed voices and swooping strings. The 'we will be here forever...do you understnad??' vocal sample launches the track into a manic Hyper-On Experience (Null Lines) drum loop sampling affair...very well put together, with string/ vocal drop outs, Vibes sampled 'Music's Wonderful' female vocals and a distinct reggae bass influence towards the close of the track (especially as the final strains are a reggae lick...). The flipside offers a suitably moody timestretched track, with plenty of space age effects, heavy hardstep drums and a nice head-nodding bassline....but this 12 will sell for the awesome A-side intro...fabulous Rick - Leeds, England / 25th Feb.95 EP Title; Ophelia ----------------- Artist; Jack Ruby Label; Knowledge The A-Side is a standard Photek-ish (But not as creative) drum&bass/hardstep number, nothing special - bit of a filler, but the flipside is a nice mellow floating GLR-esque track - drum&bass fans, this ones yours... Rick - Leeds, England / 16th Feb.95 EP Title; Out In Da Streets (Pascal's Mix) ------------------------------------------ Artist; Rude Bwoy Mony Label; Frontline #4 Pascal's mix, although better than the original, loses me with a dodgy intro, over use of the 'out in da streets' sample and unnecessarily long...but once you finally get there you've got a wicked mix tearin it up all over the place, good use of the original's samples and excellent drum programming. Check the flip, its the shit, the best mix of the two - no info on who remixed it, but it is excellent, even if that is a dred bass in the background...you like the original you'll like this - nuff rewinds over Xmas so you know the tune... Rick - Leeds, England / 15th Feb.95 Artist; Point Black ------------------- EP Title; The Style Label; One Touch Recordings #4 This sounds like a remix of D'Cruze's 'Watch Out', but obviously it isn't...uses the same vocals as the 'watch out' sample, but in their full form...a big slab of hardstep drums in the backseat, not a bad tune - even though it is a bit of a samplefest...a swing break in the middle, then back to rude boy chatting - its a good tune, definately a crowd pleaser, but not quite anthem potential - check it, you might like it (except the flipside is crap, loses the plot totally) Rick - Leeds, England / 15th Feb.95 EP Title; Rude Bwoy Dem ----------------------- Artists; Exodus & Head Pressure Label; Tearin Vinyl Don't know why this has taken so long to reach me up here, but its a decent 12 - the A-side is the best of the 2,with its film-reminiscent strings, ragga chat and well-hectic drum&bass, oh what a rush when the bass kicks in... definately dancing music - why so little recognition???? Worth checking, but the b-side is a bit cheesey with all its 'new jack city' samples.... Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Mar.95 Label; Second Movement Records #4 --------------------------------- No info, but I think its Asend & Dred Bass '12 o'clock drop', not sure - anyway the cricket sampling/sparse vocalled ominous intro soon breaks into what could almost be Dred Bass 2...since they 'created' the portamento bass sound they are forgiven for using it (but check the number of tracks with it in....). As you'd expect the drum programming is superb - but there isn't really the loony bass lines usually used...drops out to a big hands in the air/swinging breakdown, before going for it again...good tune, not Asend's best - but not to be ignored at all...hold it down for the flip, thats what we want...Dillinja-esque guitar samples and Helicopter-ish stepping breaks are soon joined by one hell of a arse winding bassline - will not fail to move a crowd - highly recommended. Rick - Leeds, England / 15th Feb.95 Label; Second Movement Records #5 (Promo) ----------------------------------------- Asend goes from strength to strength with this release, the best yet! No label, but I think it may well be remixes... Asend's passion for excellent drum programs is demonstrated (as usual) in both tracks - the A-side going for a massive hyperspeed dred bassline (not the main bass-sound, the intro sound, and much better for it too...) - repeated 'love me' vocals, with the bass swapping to a fast stepper's bass, and almost Valley Of The Shadows intro bleeps for a breakdown. Absolutely tearing tune, must be heard to feel the energy of those basslines...The flip is definately a remix of 'Can't Hold Back from SMR1: a bongoed intro, with superb drum chops in time with a cut-up female vocal sample (from the original tune) - and a long timestretched 'c-a-n-'-t h-o-l-d b-a-c-k' before giving way to Asend's drum programs...highly recommended for everyone... Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Feb.95 EP Title; Selektor Bwoy (Roni Size & Krust's mixes) --------------------------------------------------- Label; Dope Dragon I assume this is the one Mike was on about, and yes, it is a bit of a departure for Size & Krust - straight up Amen jungle drum&bass. Krust's mix begins a la ganjaman, with stop-start drum-patterns, but its not long befor ethe drums roll on & the bass drops, timestretched 'yeah' and prolonged seeeeelektor bwoy ragga samples go straight down into rumbling bass & hectic drums...space age drum&bass...Size's mix is similar, more stop-start and with a funkier bouncing bassline...well worth looking out for, and currently getting loads of plays... Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Mar.95 EP Title; Special Dedication ---------------------------- Artist; Nut Nut Label; Hard Step Another long-time-coming tune, first release on the Rider's label, been played and rewound for a number of months - again, its Topcat on the vocals, and even though its just vocals and helicoptors it is a >tune<, David Roddigan's intro vocals (tonight, you are about to hear music you've never heard before - yeah right, except for the last 6 months...) - again, no need to review properly, an essential ragga tune + the flip is a good slab of proper jungle hardstep... check this tune.. Rick - Leeds, England / 16th Feb.95 EP Title; ST Files #1 --------------------- Label; Flex Test Press Aaaah yes, Flex are comin correct - proving that it isn't just a London Som'ting, the A-side comes in with gentle breaks and touches of horn stabs, rolling down to a wicked reverse pulsing bassline (you will recognise it if you've been out since Xmas - sticks in your head), the mood of the track is pretty dark - with sparse breaks, and spooky effects coming in and out of the mix - strings gently float across the bass...lovely. All in all the track is built on the distinctive bassline...definately one for the inta steppers out there...yum yum... The flip goes for a heavily chopped Amen hardstep track - drums drums and more drums...there are some strange sample snippets in there over the mix, but this is a pure drum assault - not too fast as to be a nutty tune, just right for skipping about... Definately check this 12 out (due in a few weeks), it is a teaaarin 12... Rick - Leeds, England / 14th Mar.95 Label; Cat No STU-4 (Deejay Promo) ---------------------------------- As with the let it roll & voyager one remixes this is a single-sided pressing, this time there's a jazzy vibe in the place...funky drum loops and overlayed bleeping Irresistible Force (Mountain High) samples...the drums roll, the bleeps continue and strings gradually build up...not the most varied of tracks - but a good vibe to the track...even if its not quite up to the other two remixes... check it... Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Mar.95 EP Title; The Beast (Remix) --------------------------- Artist; Palmskin Production Label; Mo Wax Go straight to the flipside, first track, Roni Size, Krust & Suv's remix of this wicked tune - timestretched vocal samples, different style jazzy breaksand very mellow organ sounds, very reminiscent of Alex Reece's 'Jazz Juice' (but obviously the drums aren't as hard...). One of the best Roni Size remixes I've ever heard - sweet rhythms, butt satisfying bass and such a mellow outlook, you know what to expect from Roni Size, and as always - its delievered... As a bonus, the A-Side remix is in a pretty drum'n'bassfied style, quite similar to Roni's mix, very much in the same vein (but not in the same class...hehe). Also there is a big phat hip-hop mix...lovely...open-minded stuff boys & girls. Rick - Leeds, England / 28th Feb.95 EP Title; Total Control ----------------------- Artist; Foul Play Label; Movin Shadow #57 (Promo) Bit of a coup here...Live sounding instruments throughout, but I doubt they actually are, anyway...rolling drums, tambourines, heavy MS-style bass sounds, and a rolling in & out of the mix intro this track, with more sound layers building up (drums, mainly) for about an inch-or-so of intro. The Soul II Soul (maybe?) sampled 'To-tal Con-trol' vocals precede a solid steppers rhythm and a big phat n funky double bassline, the drums change, strings swoop and the bass gets more & more arse winding - then dropping to just the vocal sample and the bassline, being joined by a Saxophone and eventually a xylophone (or some other similar sounding instrument...), this >is< future music, very mellow & moody - just how it should be... The flipside is a strange one, the mellow stepping rhythms effortless move in and out of tough drum & bass, the bass- line rolls - the rhythms change, but not a lot happens - blinded by the A-side I find it difficult to compare this track...grab a copy ASAP, no idea how long MS are going to wait before promo and general release stages....superb. Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Feb.95 EP Title; Trouble in china/Subroutine ------------------------------------- Artist; Jmj & Ritchie Label; Moving Shadow Tracks; Trouble in china/Subroutine this one has been out for a while on promo, so a bunch of you probably have heard this - for those who haven't, here's a quick rundown. "trouble in china" is really nice, with lots of ethnic percussion, trancy synths, and a sweet vocal hook. "subroutine" is merely fair, though some really interesting effects are put into the beats (reverse reverb? hmmm). i like this record, but am not thrilled about it: maybe last year's amazing "hall of mirrors/case closed" raised my expectations too high... SCORE: 7.5/10 Jason/method one - Richmond, USA / 6th Jan.95 EP Title; Two On One Issue 9 ---------------------------- Artists; various Label; Moving Shadow X: nookie "i'll give it to you" Y: blame & justice "nemesis" the two on one puzzle is finally complete (now if only i had all the sleeves to hang on my wall...) with this effort by nookie and blame & justice. "i'll give it to you" is nowhere near the caliber of "only you", though it is a fairly nice (though uninspired) blend of pianos, strings and whatnot. sort of nookie-by-numbers, if you will. "nemesis", on the other hand, is anything but by-the-numbers....this is one of the most twisted things i've heard from MS. crazy, machine- gun drum patterns coming at you from every direction, somehow blended with a mellow electric piano and some smooth synths. on top of this, there is this really eerie underwater-sounding vocal bit. this track is too strange to logically work, but it somehow does....go figure. it's certainly miles away from "anthemia". SCORE: 7.5/10 Jason/method one - Richmond, USA / 6th Jan.95 EP Title; Universal Love Remixes -------------------------------- Artist; 4 Hero Label; Selector/Reinforced Don't know what the deal is with this, but in London its being sold at import prices, perhaps its due to the Made in France on the sleeve...anyway, its well worth getting hold of... Goldie's Remix - fast woodblocks, smooth strings and spoken 'universal love' intro breaks straight into a fast steppers vocal track. The vocals from the original album mix remain entact, while the track breaks down into dolphin sounding string breaks and the old-skool Reinforced bass-led rollin style, as far as remixes go, this is a fucking top track... 4 Hero Remix - not so much a remix, as an extension of the original track. Using the same string's as Goldie's remix, but with more eerie effects overlayed - in comes a light steppers rhythm and a slight echo on the original vocals, but what makes the track is the superb freeform sax solos throughout the track. Again, its marvellous... L.Double's Remix - repeated 'all we need' vocals over a building deep sub loop over the original mixes string intro are interupted by Debo's 'Listen!' cry, dropping down to a chopped up helicopter breaked jungle influenced mix, using various electro and scratching samples throughout the tune...not bad, but a jungle mix could have been done a bit better (and a bit more Amen) Nookie's Mix - as expected its an uplifting techno influenced groove, the strings are complemented by a light techno kik, before lots of sub-bass and timestretching fun takes over, with very old-skool drum patterns - slightly repetitive, but a good mix nonetheless. Rick - Leeds, England /9th Mar.95 Label; Cat No. UTR001 --------------------- Unfortunately nothing but a catalogue number, but its a good 'un! Very moody intro strings, overlayed with funky pan-pipes and that old female 'heeeey' sample - dropping into timestretched 'soundboy' hectic rewinds and heavy amen loops, submarine bleeps over the drums and tango&ratty 'final conflict' bass stabs - midway there's a string drop, the drums lick back and it all starts again...nothing new, but nice & ruff, and well produced - worth checking... Flip over for the tune thats being played,'sweet vibrations' intro drums roll into gangster 'out of bullets' samples and bleeping bassed heavy amen drums, battlestar galactica gun samples - not much else, but again, its done well and worth getting hold of... Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Mar.95 EP Title; Victory Remixes ------------------------- Artists; Dextrous & T.Bone Label; Riddim Track #1 limited to 1000 copies, so snap em up while you can... classic tune remixed, you know the KOTJ coup, reverse basslines, lighter breaks, on the spot chatting, basically if you're a fan of any of their previous releases, you'll like this a lot... Rick - Leeds, England / 18th Mar.95 EP Title; Volume One -------------------- Artist; Vivid Dreams Label; Intellect Oh Gosh, this is a tune - has to be one of the best this year! Dreamy piano intro, with moody effects over the top, dropping into hectic as fuck hardstep drums (a tad too fast, reach for the pitch down...), then OH YES! amazing female vocals over a gentle riff - then the drums drop again... imagine a superb Bukem tune at breakneck speed, and you've got this...the dopest shit... buy buy buy! Rick - Leeds, England / 9th Mar.95 EP Title; Voyager One Remix --------------------------- Label; One Sided Lucky Spin Cat No STU-7 The original let itself down by having a beautiful intro, then a standard helicopter step, but this uses fabulous strings throughout, and very solid Kaotic Chemistry-esque breaks (a la 'Illegal Subs') - rollin drum&bass all the way, very intelligent - and well worth yer money (even if it is one sided...) Rick - Leeds, England / 9th Mar.95 EP Title; War for '94/The rising -------------------------------- Artist; Badman/Tim Austin Label; Iq A: BADMAN "war for '94" B: TIM AUSTIN "the rising" this record is definatly a little bit harder than what i usually get - oh well...who am i to be stuck in a rut? anyways,"war for '94" is definatly not for the fainthearted, with it's mashed up/pitchshifted/"sound control" type beat. nice use of the sax sample (from that old public enemy track), though. "the rising" is a bit more tame (and a bit better arranged, as well). SCORE: 7/10 Jason/method one - Richmond, USA / 8th Jan.95 TeChNO / ACiD / TrANCE <<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>> Album Title; A Day On Our Planet -------------------------------- Artist; Spicelab (Oliver Lieb) Label; Harthouse Style; Ambient - Trance The 2nd album from Spicelab. After the very nice 'Lost In Spice', 'A Day On Our Planet' is here. Just like 'Lost In Spice' this cd has again 4 tracks on it, / Falling (17:59) / We Got Spice Part 1 - 4 (19:14) / Planet Spice (16:19) and A Day On Our Planet (17:49) but like you can see again very long ones :) The style goes from Ambient to somekind of a Breakbeat to Trance, like the first song 'Falling' who starts with a 6 minutes long ambient part and after that comes 'the song', a really great trance tune. The 2nd one starts also with an ambient part (3 minutes) and the rest of the song made me think on one of his earlier tunes on 'Lost In Spice' coz he uses some samples in the same style, it's not a bad song but a bit to long and not enough variation. 3rd song... 'A day on our planet', the title song of the album. Almost 18 minutes long and the style is somewhere between Trance & Breakbeat, really a great tune, not for in clubs but just to listen to it at home and then the last song 'Planet Spice' not really spectacular but still good. He uses his typical 'SpiceLab beat' and other samples that he has used often in other tunes. Well, it's certainly not a bad album but I expected a little bit better, Certainly when you know what equipment the dude uses to produce the 'Spicelab Sound'! :-) 7.5/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Jan.95 Compilation Title; Behind The Eye - Volume II --------------------------------------------- Artists; Various Label; Eye-Q Records Style; Trance * Tracklist * 01. Virtual Symmetry The V.S. (Original Mix) 02. Icon Desire (Icarus Mix) 03. Brainchild Symmertry (C-Mix) 04. Earth Nation Alienated (Earth Mix) 05. Cygnus X Superstring 06. Odyssee Of Noises Firedance (The Sunrise) 07. Brainchild Franky's 08. Cygnus X The Orange Theme 09. Odyssee Of Noises Capriole Three 10. Steve Be Zet Blue Illusion The 2nd compilation from the German label Eye Q records. On this one you don't really find any major hits, (an exception here is maybe Firedance / Odyssee of Noises). I mean not like on their first compilation (Cafe Del Mar, Wonderer, Airborn...) but more unknown tunes, that doesn't mean that they aren't nice! The cd includes some really nice trance tunes like Virtual Symmertry / The V.S. and the beautiful Firedance from Odyssee Of Noises. I like Behind The Eye I more then this one, but this one is also not bad, give it a try... 7/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 6th Mar.95 Compilation Title; Cherry Moon Volume II ---------------------------------------- Artist; Various Style; Hardtrance / Hardcore The second compilation from the Cherry Moon is here. Songs on it this time are. Cherry Moon Trax 2 / Let There be House - Union Jack / 2 Full Moons And A Trout (Casper Pound Mix) - Moby / Hymn (European Mix) - Ian Pooley / Twin Gods - Aurora Borealis / The Milky Way - Lemon 8 / Lemon 8 Remix - Yves Deruyter / Calling Earth (Felix Da Housecat Rmx) - Secret Cinema / Timeless Altitude (Secret Cinema Mix) - System D II / Deviant Behaviour - Dream Concept / Shy Kid (In Rythm Mix) - Channel X / Rave The Rythm (Trance Mix) - Microglobe / Acid Mentality (Act 4) - Rainforest / Mania - Hankstyle / Wrest and Paradizer / Songs Of Liberation (Liberation Mix). Well I think this Cd offers quiete commercial songs from wellknow artists like Union Jack, Moby, Secret Cinema. If you don't have these songs 'yet' on cd, maybe this is a good choice to buy it, but they could have made a much better cd with songs who aren't on almost 'every' compilation. * 6/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Jan.95 Album Title; Different Journeys ------------------------------- Artist; The Source Experience / Robert Leiner Label; R&S Records (RS 94056 CD) Style; Techno / Hardtrance Tracklist Unknown Territory / Point Zero / Pressure Drop / Diatonic Shift / Intruder / X-Ray / Nightshift / Voices Of The Spirit. The 27 year old Swedish artist presents his next debut album on the legendary R&S label. Like you can see in the track- list there are 8 tracks on this one and the style goes from techno to hardtrance. Why can I say about this album except that it's very good and it looks very nice! :) (You can't miss this in the record-shop look for a fluo-orange cd with a smashing design! :) Every Hardtrance / Techno fan should buy this one! Please God... Give me more of this! R&S Electronic Info ------------------- Dialectrique BBS : +32 2 2451196 Dialectrique E-Mail : prombaux@ulb.ac.be 9/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 3rd Feb. 95 Compilation Title; Freak Out ---------------------------- Artist; Various Style; Trance / Mellow A compilation who is compiled by the Belgian Dj Stefaan who plays often in the Belgian Club 'The House Of House - Cherry Moon' and who has an own radio program on the radio called 'Behind The Beat' (which is very nice b.t.w.) 15 songs on this one, Armand Van Helden / The Witch Doctor * Floorjam / Stoneage * Movin Melodies / La Luna * Celvin Rotane / I Believe * Morel's Groove Pt.4 / Let's Groove * Joe T Vannelli Feat. Csilla / Play With The Voice In Germany * Rozzo / In Your Heart * Steaming Promises / Sluts 'N' Strings * Private Productions / Sad Sad Song * Quadripart / Joy * Antares / Bright Side Of The Sun * Dj Sneak / The Lights * Ubiquity / Bolivian Angel * Lazonby / Sacred Cycles * T.T.B. / You've Got To Stand Up. When I heard that this Cd was compiled by Stefaan I expected somethings else... It's not really the style that he plays often as a Dj, when he spins he plays mostly some trance & hardtrance but this is more mellow then trance. There are some cewl tracks on it like The Witchdocter (I guess everybody will know this songs by now :) and some other ones like Lazonby. I expected more 'his' style with the numbers he plays often as a Dj and who are hard to find on Cd's like, "Ilumination - Illumination By Satelite", "Skyline Rmx - Resistance D" and lots of others ones from who I still don't know the name... I expected something else, but I think the mellow (trance) freaks among us will like this one... 6.5/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 3rd Feb. 95 Compilation Title; Global Virus (Harthouse Compilation 4) --------------------------------------------------------- Artist; Various Label; Frankfurt Harthouse Style; Hardtrance Already the 4th compilation from Harthouse, how many are they gonna make? :) Here follows the track-list. * Spicelab / Pyrospice * Afrotrance / Spiritual Energy * Patrick Lindsey / Tornment * Eternal Basement / Taking Place In You * Pulse / Soul Hunter * Resistance D. / Skyline (Eternal Basement Mix) * Koxbox / Acid Vol.3 * Synesthasia / Slope (Dub Mix) and Hardfloor / Fish & Chips. Again a pretty nice compilation from Harthouse. There are some really smashing tunes on it like the beautiful 'Pyrospice' from Spicelab and the pretty awesome 'Skyline Remix' From 'Resistance D' and not to forget 'Fish & Chips' from 'Hardfloor'. If you're a Harthouse fan then you maybe should buy these ones, those compilations are a good way to collect their biggest hits ever. *7/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Jan.95 Compilation Title; Hard Trance - Psychedelic Techno --------------------------------------------------- Artist; Various Label; Phantasm Records Style; Hardtrance / Trance Two Full Moons And A Trout / Union Jack * Afterglow / Deep Bass 5 * The Essence (Clanger Mix) / Pob * Helicon / Unlocking The Astral * From Above And Beyond / Kaleidoscope Eye * Warriors Groove / Young Braves * Know Your 101 / Root * Aliens / Interlect 3000 * Xtracelestial / Manna Machine * Life Is An Illusion / Mindfield * Hardsync (Can You Feel It) / Hardsync * This Is For Real / Auto Union * Mendax / Faction * Bermuda / Bermuda. Good Cd compilation with lots of nice (hard)trance tunes on it. I wonder what the hell 'From Above And Beyond' from 'Kaleidoscope Eye' is doing here (it's an ambient track ?!), or is it just to fill the Cd? I think everybody will know 'Two Full Moons And A Trout' by 'Union Jack' the rest are more 'underground' tracks, not really smashing tunes (and they will never be) but certainly not bad ones. Give it a try... Choice of The Records : 5.5/10 Mixing Technique : 7/10 6.5/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 3rd Feb. 95 Album Title; Music ------------------ Artist; The Plastikman - Ritchie Hawtin Label; NovaMute (NOMU37CD) Style; Acid/Trance - Experimental The new album of the Plastikman. 10 tracks on this one, Konception, Plastique, Kriket, Fuk, Outbak, Ethnik, Plasmatik, Goo, Marbles & Lasttrack. The style hasn't changed on this album, it's still 100% "Plastikman-Sound". Most of the songs are numbers to listen to at home (maybe except if the Dj puts the Sl/Mk II on +8, Hey it worked with 'Spastic' :)) like "Konception" and the beautiful "Plastique" which has a pretty nice video-clip b.t.w. There are some 'faster' tunes on it like "Fuk" and "Marbles" if you compare them to the rest of the tunes. Not a bad cd give it a try, I'm sure that we will hear "Fuk" and "Marbles" often in the clubs. 6.5/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 3rd Feb. 95 Compilation Title; Quality Dance 1 ---------------------------------- Artist; Various Label; Growth Style; Trance The Belgian pioneer of house music strikes back. This compilation is compiled by 'Frank De Wulf' wellknow from his 'B-Sides' some years ago. Now he has his own label 'Growth' and this is the first compilation on this label. 12 tracks on this compilation, The Remix Ep - Planetary Assault System Remix / Joey Beltram - The Caliber EP, DROME / Subsonic 808 - Ride Me / Dogmatic Sequences - Contruction Tool / Sysex - M-Park / The Ethics - La Luna / Underworld - Dark Train / Luke Slater - Lost / Secret Cinema - Stop My Love / Andre - 7 Minutes Of Happiness / Space Monkey - Morph / Cerpent - Aw. The word "Quality" seems to be the keyword for every track on this Cd. It includes some major hits of 94 like "Dark Train" from "Underwold", "Joey Beltram" with the beautiful "Caliber EP, DROME" and ofcourse "Subsonic 808" with "Ride Me". Finally a good trance Cd with songs that you don't find on every (so called) "Trance Compilation". Good work Frank De Wulf, waiting for 'Quality Dance II'. * 8/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Jan.95 Compilation Title; Rave Zone Montini Volume II ---------------------------------------------- Artist; Various Style; Hardcore / Trance Seems like it's really 'in' to bring out a Cd from a club, first let me give you the track-list. Quartet / Hold That Sucker Down - Plastikman / Spastik - Traxman a Eric Martin / Ride Me Baby - Robert Armani / Fire Allarm - Mandala / The Encore - Vanqueur / Lyot - Public Energy / Three'o'Three - Joey Beltram / Electric - Chaos Tribe / Paralized Mind and Cj. Bolland / Mantra. Like you can see a lot of old songs on this compilation like Dave Clarke, Plastikman, Vanqueur, Public Energy, Cj. Bolland, Robert Armani... This Cd brings mostly old songs which you can find on a lot of other compilations, maybe look for another Cd with some newer songs on it :) * 5/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Jan.95 Compilation Title; Serious Beats 14 (2 Cd) ------------------------------------------ Artists; Various Style; Hardcore / Trance -* Cd 1 *- Emmanuel Top (Acid Phase), Cherry Moon Trax II (Let There Be House), Anthony Acid (Gimme Da Music), Spokesman (Acid Creak), System D II (Trancefusion - Marnix Trance Mix), Dj Tofke feat. Insider (Mushrooms), Drax Limited II (The Fight Goes On), Zolex (Mono Sound), Desert Storm (Scoraig '93), Luvspunge (Didn't I Give You Love), Sax 4 Two (Sacha's Love), Quadripart (Joy), Private Productions (Sad Sad Song - Robert's Mix), Club Circuit (Groove To Move - 1), Spirit Solution (I'm Dead), Airscape (Cruising - Exposure Mix), Vinyl Blair (Horsework - Vinyl's Source Radish Mix) -* Cd 2 *- Pizzaman (Trippin' On Sunshine), Outhere Brothers (Don't Stop), Paperclip People (Throw), Dj Sneak (The Lights - Part II), Yves De Ruyter 4 (Calling Earth), B.O.D. (No More Mind Games - It's A Dream Mix), Inspiral Carpets (Saturn 5 - Gravity Source Mix), Act One (Moonwalk), Mephisto (Euphemia (Zolex Remix), Acrid Abeyance (Minimalistic), Dream Frequence (Trancid Overdose), Emmanuel Top (Turkish Bazar - Mo-Tune Mix), Cyrolab (Invisible), Dogs Of Gomorah (No Rules - Insider Remix), Magnus (Acid Tanzvision), K-Lab (Hungarian Rave), Astrospider vs. Keling (Viva). Volume 14 of the Serious Beats collection is here and like you can see again a rather commercial one, tought it's much better than their previous ones. Some nice tracks on it like Emmanuel Top, Spokesman, Drax, Paperclip people and some other ones. The normal :) house/techno/rave (or whatever) freaks certainly will like this but I think the undergrounders among us will prefer a compilation with less commercial tunes on it. 6.5/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 3rd Feb. 95 Album Title; Stormwatch ----------------------- Artist; Morph (Damon Wild & Dennis Ferrer) Label; New Electronica Style; Trance / Hardtrance 'MORPH' is no one else then Mr.Experimental himself, Damon Wild and his co-producer 'Dennis Ferrer'. With 'Stormwatch' they've made a really quality collection of mindblowing Hardtrance and Trance tunes. There are 10 songs on this album. Stormwatch / Juggernaut / Morphing / Planet Sweeper / Aphalon / Morphine / Afro / Our Future / First Born and Horizon. Every song is somewhere between Hardtrance and Trance and when I say the word 'TRANCE' I mean 'TRANCE'. Not like 'Frankfurt Harthouse' who think they are making 'Hardtance'. These days it sounds more like 'Mellow' and 'Hardcore' (I don't think that you can call 'Roarrh / Hardfloor' and 'the Ambush 2 / The Ambush' Hardtrance tunes, sounds more like hardcore to me). ('Frankfurt Harthouse': Don't get me wrong, but it's like you've lost 'the' feeling'! :( ) The songs on 'MORPH', 'Stormwatch', 'Juggernaut, 'Morphine' are making a masterwork from this CD, only one suggestion for the Hardtrance and Trance freaks, BUY IT! * 9/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Jan.95 Album Title; The Harlequin The Beauty And The Beast --------------------------------------------------- Artist; Sven Vath Label; Eye Q Style; Hardtrance / Ambient The long awaited album from Sven Vath finally is here, you can find 9 tracks on this one. Intro / Harlequin Plays Bells / Harlequin - The Beauty And The Beast / Harlequin's Meditation / The Birth Of Robby / Robot / Ballet-Romance / Ballet Fusion and Ballet Dancer. The style goes from Ambient to Hardtrance. The album begins with an intro from about 5 minutes (ambient style) where you can hear Sven saying a little poem 'Ich Kenne keine schminke, und mein gesicht verbirgt nicht, wie es meinem inneren aussieht. Ich bleibe mir, auch bei meinen verchtern, so treu, dass selbst diejenigen meiner anhnger mich nicht verleugnen knnen, die sich aussehen und ansehen eines weisen verschafft haben, dennoch aber eher affen gleichen, die in purpur gewickelt sind, oder eseln, die sich im lwenfell verstecken. Mgen sie sich noch so beflissen verstelen, ein paar eselsohren wird doch stets sichtbar bleiben und den midas verraten.' After that the first song begins, which is not bad, but it makes me think about Jean Michell Jarre in a way, 'the' feeling is gone :( The third song from the Cd 'Harlequin, Beauty And The Beast' is the most commercial one from the Cd, probably because they show it alot on MTV (the video clip from that song is really nice! (Silicon Graphics ofcourse :)) after that comes Harlequin's Meditation, an ambient song from around the 13 minutes which is very nice, Birth of robby comes after that again the same like 'The harlequin, the beauty and the beast' nice, but the feeling is gone. Robot is the 6th song from the album, also nice but I still miss something. Ballet-Romance, the 8th song from the album is a short ambient tune from about 1 minute long to introduce the next song 'Ballet Fusion'. Ballet Fusion, that's more like it! Good tune and the last song from the album is Ballet Dancer again an ambient tune, good one. Well I expected more a 'hardtrance' album from Sven Vath, It's not bad but I miss 'the' feeling, 'the' feeling from the old Frankfurt Harthouse when Sven Vath released songs under 'The Essence Of Nature' and made some great hits like 'Blue Lotus' and 'Blue Orchidee'. Give it a try... * 7/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Jan.95 Cd Title; The Secret Life Of Trance 4 (2 Cd) -------------------------------------------- Artist; Various Label; Rising High Style; Trance *- Cd 1 -* Influx - Flying All Day / Syzygy - Osiris / Phax Feat. Steve Bug - Triptop / Sound Enforcer - Reinforcement II / Friends, Lovers & Family - Imajica (Acid Frost Mix) / Basic Gravity - Rajah (Serious Mix) / M-Age - Visitor (Air Liquide Mix) / Union Jack - Cactus / Neutron 9000 - Indian Prayer. *- Cd 2-* Air Liquide - Space Brothers / Caspar Pound - House (Peter Parker & Mr Tom Anderson Mix) / Rhc Featuring Plavka - Heartbeat / Sourmash - Pilhrimage To Paradise (Hardfloor Mix) / Tanzmuzik - Container / Baby Doc - Eurotic / Basic Gravity - Rajah (Rise Mix) / MLO - Wimborne (MLO Mix) / Phax Featuring Steve Bug - Triptop (Humate Mix). A trance Cd which the trance freaks certainly will like. All tracks on the Cd are really quality trance tracks. Not all new ones (like the beatiful Rajah and Tritop, great to hear these ones back!) but certainly all worth listening to. Looking for a good trance compilation with some older and newer work on it, buy this one. * 7/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Jan.95 CD Title; Trance Europe Express III (2 Cd) ------------------------------------------ Artist; Various Style; Trance / Hardtrance Let's start with the track-list. Cd 1 * Air Liquid / Chromoplastic * 808 State / Mondonet * Banco De Gaia / Kincajou * Luke Slater's 7th Plain / Pearl * Pulse / Carino (Silencio) * Joey Beltram / Judgement * Sun Electric / Whoshe * Holy Language / Energy * Resistance D. / Unknown * Kinesthesia / Lave Trader * M-ZiQ / Roy Castle * Caustic Window / Cunt Cd 2 * Mouse On Mars / Maus Mobil * Ultramarine / Before * Coco Steel And Lovebomb / San Fran * William Orbit / Barbarik * Inner Space / Araqua * Link / Avatar * Nw Idol / Ancient Memory * The Grid / Big Foor * Alter Ego / Sex And Gender * Biosphere / The Third Planet * Infitity (Juan Atkins) / I-94 * Eddy 'Flashin' Fowles / Track 4 * Emergency Broadcast Network / 3:78 Like you see a very various list of artist (I still wonder what the hell 'The Grid' is doing here?? It makes the Cd fall apart!). Pretty weird Cd is you ask me, take Cd one, from track 4 (Luke Slater) till 9 (Resistance D.) the songs are mixed all the rest are normal (maybe because between 4 and 9 you find the best tracks from the whole Cd (Joey Beltram's Judgement is great!) There are some nice songs on it like the ones from Joey Beltram, Luke Slater, Sun Electric, Resistance D. & Biosphere but the rest is nothing special, could be better! The nice booklet is maybe the only great thing about this Cd It counts 192 pages and gives you lots of information from artist like 808 State, Luke Slater, Joey Beltram, Sun Electric, Resistance D.... There is also a nice article about 'The Love Parade' and lots of info from Dj's also, like Sven Vath, Dave Angel, Mixmaster Morris, Miss Djax, Paul Van Dyk and a lot more! * 6.5/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Jan.95 Compilation Title; Universe - The Tribal Gathering 94 (2 Cd) ------------------------------------------------------------ Artists; Various Label; Frankfurt Beat Style; Trance / Hardtrance / Hardcore Let's start again with the tracklist. *- Cd 1 -* The Jeyenne - Universe Intro / Gayle San - Universe Anthem / The Jeyenne - Japanese Train / Exit-EEE - Straight Up From Heaven / Paul Van Dyk - Pump This Universe / Dj Cirillo - Ozone Free / Mario De Bellis - Yes / Paragnon - Multi Line / Marco Zaffarano - Cyclop Wonder / Pascal FEOS & Dr.Atmo - Make Me Cry / Joe Jam - Objekt *- Cd 2 -* Dj Dag -It's A Beautiful Day / Dj Bismark - House Backup / Nicky Sprenger - A Smart Melody / Carl Cox - Anthemia / Dave Angel - Jelly Fish / Dave Clark - Gonk / Marc & Claude - Ecoute Remix / Oliver Lieb - ID / Jens Lissat - Bulga / Lenny Dee - When The Music Starts / Miss Djax - Voltage. Looks impresive eh?... To be honest this Cd has really disapointed me, I expected a much better Cd when you have names like Exit EEE, Paul Van Dyk, Marco Zaffarano, Dave Angel, Oliver Lieb... on it. Sounds more like a collection of 'my worst tunes ever'. Ok, there are exceptions like the songs from Gayle San, The Intro from The Jeyenne, Paragnon, Carl Cox and some other ones, but I expected a lot of these artist, like Marco Zaffarano (with his great 'Supernova') and now such an *ugly* track. Dave Clark (with the nice 'Red1' and 'Red2') ok, this one 'Gonk' is not THAT bad, but I expected better. Pascal FEOS (Shame on you, such a commercial tune) Oliver Lieb (After all those nice things!) and ofcourse because I've been to the tribal gathering '94. This cd has NOTHING to do with the nice rave and I haven't heard any of these tunes from the cd at the rave! The music at the tribal gathering 94 was totally different. * 5.5/10 The UnderTaker - Gent, Belgium / 9th Nov.95 Compilation Title; Unpaved Roads - Route One -------------------------------------------- Artist; Various Label; Nutrition Style; Mellow / Trance Let's start with the tracklist, * N.Y. Connection / In Front * Innertube / Pump Me Up * Daniel Miquel / Sueno Innocente * Timeless / Space * Zodiac Trax 2 / Northstar * Holographic Hallicunation / Rastaman in Tokyo * Thotfull Spot III / Trans-Sylvania * Whitestorm / Bongo's & B-Line * Carnaval Of Sound / Lollipop * Shi Take / Don't Look Back In Anger * Union Jack / 2 Full Moons And A Trout * T.B.B. 002 / Electronics For Dogs * Quadripart / Joy - Exit-EEE * Vinyl Blair / Horsework * Aphrohead / In The Dark We Live * Shape Shifter / Jumbo. All the tracks on this Cd are mixed by Peter Vriends and Stephan Steinsky (not with vinyl) and are not all new ones (like the ones from 'Shape Shifter', 'Union Jack', 'Zodiac Trax 2', 'Timeless'....) but still very nice to hear If you still haven't got these, it may be a good opportunity to buy this one. Can't say much more about this one because I guess every raver will know songs like, * Union Jack / 2 Full Moons And A Trout * Aphrohead / In The Dark We Live * Timeless / Spice and lots of other ones to, you probably don't know the names but I'm sure you've heard the songs before.
