Brooks: Pink Cigarettes |
(Mantis) |
"Pink Cigarettes" [168k RealAudio] |
"He's like Daniel Ibbotson, only closer to London." Okay, there's my throw-away/postage-stamp/column-inch review. But this new record from Brooks (19-year-old Andy Brooks of Derby, England) deserves more attention and praise than that. Dancing effortlessly on the dancing/listening axis, this song is damn near perfection. For starters, the melody is absolutely infectious, albeit somewhat amorphous (but in a good way). Same goes for the bleary saxophone samples. Brooks arranges it all with tremendous skill--even finding room to incorporate female vocals, processed to sound more like long-distance sweet nothings. Also included on the 12" are more forceful mixes from Rhythm Plate and Atjazz. Neither seems to quite match the ethereal magic of the original.
