I was not fast enough to incorporate it in last week's issue. sorry...] In other news, did you ever listen to a compilation called "Illegal Rave!"? It features a good selection of hardcore techno from the real British rave scene. This CD compilation has hardcore from 1991 to 1992 and features a couple hard cuts from DJ Scoobie and the Undergound Movement. Playlist: 1 - Undercover Movement - Acid Rydims (underground anthem mix) 2 - DJ Scoobie - King Bass Head (dope dog mix) 3 - Slammin' Techno - Just Dance (dream mix) 4 - Time Syndicate - Rock Wit Me (in ya face mix) 5 - DJ Scoobie - Mash Up The Speakers (speaker just melted mix) 6 - Hackney Hardcore - DanceHall Dangerous (terrorise mix) 7 - Son Of God - Sunday Raver (religion causes another war mix) 8 - Undercover Movement - Fly In My Soup (Brundel flys experiment) 9 - Free Bass - Spliffed + Chillin' (mello mean ambient mix) 10 - Mad Ragga Man - Let Me Tell Ya! (jungleliest mix) 11 - Unity - Set Me Free (united ravers mix) 12 - Cultural Assault - Step Up (boom the bass box mix) Every track has a heavy bass beat that's sure to get your feet moving. Track 8 has a very interesting begining with a fly buzzing around. I found the first 7 tracks to real intense music while tracks 8 and 9 are milder in pushing out the whoofers on the speakers. Track 10 is a little different and is my favorite. It mixes reggae with acid techno with a touch of record scratching in the background. Unity's track is also a techno/reggae with more of a hardcore flavour, it's sure to get you moving. And finally track 12 is yet another techno/reggae mix with a hint of trance. On my techno scale of raveability I'd give this CD a 8 out 10 !! In Canada, this disk is being distributed by SPC and has been licensed from Virgin in the UK. Title: Illegal Rave! And if you want to transfer files ( the archives on techno.stan- ford.edu for example), you will need ftp (file transfer protocol). Last, if you want to read the Usenet newsgroups, you will need a news reader like rn. Here are a few options to get Internet access: Email: America Online, GEnie, Prodigy: (check the yellow pages for local number) Compuserve: 1-614-457-8650 (voice) Email and Usenet: Mala's: (514) 939-7123 Operation Prometheus: (514) 735-4340, (514) 735-4370 Radio Free Nyongwa: (514) 524-0829 Email, Usenet and other services (ftp, irc, telnet...): Communications accessibles montreal: (514) 931-0749 (voice) Mindvox: 1-800-MINDVOX And there are several others that offer different level of services, at various prices (Radio Free Nyongwa, for example is totally free, while others can charge up to several hundred $ per month or even week). In an upcoming revision, i will add the numbers for login.qc.ca, xon/xoff and a few others. Of course all these options require a computer and a modem, but there are some alternatives: you can ask for an account at your university and use the terminals at the university. Also, in Ottawa, it is possible to use the Freenet in the library of Carleton University. I will establish some Internet point of access on the same concept in Montreal, in a short term (when i will be able to get a place with a free phone line). Once you have Internet email access, with your email program you will now subscribe to the lists that are of interest to you. Here are some on raves: majordomo@techno.stanford.edu [San Francisco and Bay Area - subject:subscribe sfraves] majordomo@techno.stanford.edu [North/East - subject:subscribe ne-raves] socal-raves-request@ucsd.edu [South California] listserv@orbital.demon.co.uk [UK - put subscribe uk-dance in the message] listserv@american.edu [South/East - SUB SERAVES in the message] listserv@american.edu [District of Colombia - SUB DCRAVES in the message] flraves-request@cybernet.cse.fau.edu [Florida] mw-raves-request@engin.umich.edu [Mid/West] nw-raves-request@wimsey.bc.ca [North/West and Western Canada] pb-cle-raves-request@telerama.pgh.pa.us [Pittsburgh/Cleveland] cyberpun@wam.umd.edu [University of Maryland-centric] laura@usl.com [New York City - Technopolis] And of course this electronic magazine list: cism@ERE.UMontreal.CA [Montreal and Eastern Canada - Raving Up North] There is also an australian rave list, but i cant Aussi, il existe des listes pour les musiciens ou les fans de groupes qui se rapportent a la musique techno, regulierement. There are much more lists and you can find out about them by reading some newsgroups on Usenet (rn), like alt.rave, rec.music.makers.synth or rec. music.info. In rec.music.info, you will find for example, a list of all the musical lists, music related ftp sites and FAQ lists (frequently asked questions lists). In the bunch of good ftp sites, check these two, for a start: ftp cs.uwp.edu username: anonymous password: in /pub/music ftp techno.stanford.edu username: anonymous password: in /pub/raves Next step is to talk in real time to other vravers. To do that, you need telnet access and execute this command: telnet sfraves.stanford.edu 7283 and when you are asked for a login, type: new There is also a rave channel on IRC: #rave or #techno. To join, do: irc /nick /who #rave (or /who #techno) to know if the channel exists and if there are people on it, and finally: /join #rave (/help and /exit are also good commands to know :P) For the rest (archie, gopher, veronica, digest, ezine, etc...), you will find out about it by reading FAQs, informational texts etc... Regarding the Illegal Rave compilation that Robert mentionned, it is domestic since the beginning of the year. It is a hardcore compilation in the british understanding of the term and is a bit dimmed (not doomed! :P) by a few filling tracks. DJ Scoobie, Hackney Hardcore and Underground Movement have some interesting tracks, but can be found on previous Telstar & Virgin compilations. If you can listen before you buy, i would suggest it strongly as this is a very strange compilation (cant find the exact english term, ooops). I see that SPG (Canadian licensing label) is much more available and popular in Ontario than Quebec (or maritimes i would think), compared to some other Canadian labels like Hype!, Hi-Bias or Probe/ Plus-8. Dunno why, tough... [>ExTRO N'oubliez pas d'imprimer RUN pour le partager avec vos amis et ecoutez le 89.3 le vendredi soir, 21h.
