Laboratories I've managed to homebrew three pieces of equipment for the reception and transmission of amplitude modulated and frequency modulated electromagnetic radiation across regions of the spectrum. The first of these is a two-stage IF, double-balanced mixer, xtal VCO, diode switched selectable bandpass filter bank, 1-30MHz [tunable in 1Hz increments] transceiver [100W output ]. The second is a double-front diversity reception receiver in the 30-120MHz region. The third is a receiver on the 2m band. I've monitored for Trance music and will transcribe my findings to a future emissary of Trance Fixed (since I've managed barely now to set up a 18AWG 400m random wire antenna and get an antenna impedance matching tuner). In the meanwhile, I will discuss the commercial radio emmission in Mexico City of a program dedicated mostly to TRANCE yet totally to the cyber and another one dedicated to dance mixes. Program Profile #1 Program Name: VIRTUAL RADIO Station: 98.5MHz FM Radio Activo Location : Mexico City Frequency: weekly[tuesdays] + specials Narrator : Martin Hernandez Duration: 1 hour [9-10PM with two 3min commercial breaks] Now in its 25th installment, VIRTUAL RADIO is the top recognized and best program on commercial Mexican radio exclusively dedicated to electronic music. Although varying from installment to installment and having featured at least one song from around 25-30 genres (rave breakbeat, new beat, harthouse, ambient, electronic body music, gabba, manchester sound, frankfurt beat, rotterdam sound, etc) the distribution seems since the last 8-10 installments to have centered around 40% Trance (trance, tribal trance, hardtrance), 25% Electro, 25% Hardhouse and 10% all others. This equilibrium has been reached due to the feedback from listener fans of specific genres. The program's success is mainly due to the dynamic values of the production team led by Sergio Kischnner [known as Dr. Electro] and Luz Vargas [known as Pushni] who are not only the exec prod but the top fanatics of e music. This has been reflected by the new release and material gathering trips they carry out to New York, Antwerp, Berlin, London, Los Angeles and Tokio (one of which they are due to be back from and for which all listeners are anxious). It is also seen in that they have been the producers for other previous e-music dedicated program attempts [notably in 96.9WFM]. Thus, VIRTUAL RADIO is a continuation of that effort. In addition to the regular installments there've been three special programs. The first of these was a 2 hour special entitled HISTORY which made a recount of the progression of electronic music from the late 70's and its division into multiple genres and some of those genres representatives. Much better to tape this program than to try to get recompilations or material trying to cover the contents. I reckon the special's quality was clearly observed in the airing of some quite difficult to get mix releases of KRAFTWERK (such as the Shouting Mix of Tour de France or the Live in Germany92 Numbers/Computer Werld in Cyberspace), part of an interview with JUAN ATKINS, and a live cut by DIGITAL BOY from his 1992 Spontaneous Session in Mexico City (a truly underground happening back then). The second special was a 2 part 2 hour total in-person interview and music profile taped in London of COSMIC BABY. In this interview Harold spoke about his _Thinking about Myself_ and the changes from Stellar Supreme, his change of record label because of less control on his part on things like being placed in compilations he didn't like ("I don't want to be in a compilation with Marusha"), travelling around the world, about how at a club in London they wanted him to come out with a couple of dancing girls (wasn't amused), his music for a performance called Futura dealing with all people having migrated to Cyberspace and the german scene. The response to this special was overwhelming according to an aired note on a subsequent reg installment (#21) that also said that a welcomed surprise was being worked out with COSMIC BABY for a simultaneous Mex broadcast of the world release of a new single on german radio and the program's repetition in other spanish speaking countries such as Argentina. The repercussions of this special, in conjunction with many other factors and events weighed in, lead TRANCEFIXED to consider that COSMIC BABY has taken the lead in national fandom displacing MOBY from the position. The third special was a 1 hour interview and music profile taped at the Masterminded For Success record label headquarters in Berlin with PAUL VAN DYK. This interview was planned to coincide with the nov 14th release of his new EP _The Green Valley_. The conversation in this interview went along several lines: Paul was asked about his origin to which he replied that he started doing house mixes at home and playing them to people - he actually used turntables and vinyls. Following the chronological thread of his participations, Paul was questioned as to why there had been no further elaboration on the portentous VISIONS OF SHIVA project in collaboration with COSMIC BABY. Paul's answer was that the catapulting of COSMIC to mega figure had affected him - that success sometimes is adverse and that VISIONS OF SHIVA had simply been sharply cut off because they were no longer in contact. In talking about the rave scene Paul spoke about the UNIVERSE RAVE and said it had been well done and that he had liked a detail he saw which consisted in the organizers having people with cameras who took snapshots and gave away for free the Polaroids to the kids. Paul was asked what he thought the future of "techno" is. Paul replied he did not know but that he did not like people coming up with new aural constructs and then have them ripped-off two months later by some commercial stunt like 2UNLIMITED. Finally, Paul spoke on the point of drugs saying that they had nothing to do with those who are truly able to TRANCE and tune into the music, that he had never taken drugs himself and that all the energy he found within and expressed in his single _My World_. The program's structure is direct: a 20 second beginning and straight on to the music. At the end of each track the artist, the track title, the procedence, the recording label and the genre are mentioned. The last 3 minutes are fast aired notes called e-mail regarding fans phone calls (the producers' voice and FAX phone line numbers are always read) , mail and announcements. Prominently mentioned are the program's follower club self proclaimed as The Cyborgs with now 100+ signed members, The Cybernauts, TRANCEFIXED and a group of followers of gabba and ultra hardcore melt-tronics (I forgot what they call themselves). The narrator is the station's top dj who has a live program every day in the competed prime time slot [5-8 PM] and who features in this slot other cyber genre singles such as GRID's _Rollercoaster_, the Major Tom new techno remake and COSMIC BABY's _Space Track_. His favourite electronic is KRAFTWERK according to himself. >Phobia(Holy Atom)>>>Cyclotron>>>> Program Profile #2 Program Name: ALTER MIX Station: 98.5MHZ Radio Activo Location: Mexico City Frequency: weekly [fridays] Narrator: None Duration: 2 hours [9-11 PM] [1 commercial break after 1 hour start] This program, in which Frederick Robles is the producer, the DJ and mixmaster all at once, is an all-music continuous mix transmission of a near-totality of dance music genres from afro-antillian through pop, techno-pop, neodisco, Billboard charts, industrial, tribal, indie, house, rap, etc all the way to TRANCE. Although the variety may be welcomed by many, it's actually somewhat counterproductive because what it means is that there might be a Madonna rip that plays right in and is mixed into a Front242 piece then right through into Pet Shop Boys. Do not be mislead here; the mixes are professional (Harmonics matching, pitch-change physics modelling and other advanced techniques) but the diversity prohibits continuation of the train of thought and hence the adquisition of the state of TRANCE when one of its member songs sets in. After many such progs and patient explanation of the above, Robles puts now all the TRANCE as a joint block so that there is a thread from TRANCESETTERS' _Secrets of Meditation_ into ODYSEE OF NOISE's _Troya_ across C.J. BOLLAND's _Mantra_ deep into AIRE LIQUIDE's _Liquid Air_ back through 62100's _Psychogreen_ and beyond FRANK DE WULF's _Africa's Rhyme_ towards THE AGE OF LOVE's _The Age of Love_ to close the program, for example. The club's success was to be celebrated with a thursday, friday and saturday DJ jam featuring dj ACME, dj Transition (L.A.) and Freddy Robles. The culmination and price award was to be on saturday so I decided to attend on that day -- having press access I had no worry about getting in but I knew there was a lot of expectation since the event had been heavily publicized on radio and was to be aired. Part of the judges panel were the radio announcers. The price tag to the general public was $ 40 US - free bar - girls free entrance -. I arrived with two other persons at about 9 p.m.--- I wanted to be in on the full proceedings. The cars cue on the club's street began a block away so we detoured, parked a couple of blocks away and walked. MEDUSA's club is a place which was designed expressedly for high attendance weekly raves with a capacity of 2500 persons. There is a language coincidence here - for a long time prior to the concept of a rave there has been the use of the word "reventon" often abbreviated to "reven" which in spanish means blowout to refer to a loud music high attendance party. Adequately, many have taken to associate "reven" with "rave". Beyond proximity of the "reven" place there was already a crowd of 1200-1500 persons (mostly girls) so that trying to get to the door to use the press access would be swimming through ppl. After 30 minutes and some serious shouting we got in. From the outside Medusa's club is observed as a two floor blue glass facade with wide corrugated ramps at the front and sides leading up to the entrance. Once in there is a vestibule where there is a chill bar to the side, the ticket expenditure and a souvenir sale show so you can buy pins, jackets, shirts, etc. The entrance to the actual party is a door cut into a wall with a 8X10m very well done mural of H.R.GIGER's Medusa. A lot of people linger prior to entering to socialize and look at artistic and musical celebrities - or at least the costumed. The club allows you in costumed like a raver (sock hat comfort shoes, jogging pants) or astronaut (there was a guy with a 2001: A Space Odyssey suit) or most anything I suspect as long as there are no exposed genitals. The place is akin to a roofed recessed semi-circle amphitheater. The tiers have stairs leading up to waitered tables. Scaled models of WWII combat planes hang from the roof together with cages, all the light, CO2 and laser show equip and the actual djs sound cabin which you get into with a rope ladder. There are two main bars and a smart drink and water bar(purified, mineral or aereated). At the far end of the roof towards the upper amphitheater's tier there are a multiplicity of fan air-intake ducts which are internally illuminated purposedly to provide the Blade Runner look. The dance floor has a 4X10m rectangular section which can hydraulically elevate 90cm above the rest (which I experienced as I was caught there during one of the hardtrance pieces) As press, we were led to a waitered table on the third tier --- very good sight overlooking the dance floor to assess the event. As we entered and were being led I caught on to the sound of KRAFTWERK's _THE MODEL_ - a good start. The club's sonics are massive & keen on the subwoofer frequencies - I mean for the really hardcore crew - No talking with anyone else at less than shouting mouth to ear on the dance floor. Prior to the start of the jam the music featured pre- rave ambient trance like PSYCHICK WARRIORS OV GAIA , ASTRALASIA, COSMIC BABY's _Heaven's Tears_ , THE ORB's _little fluffy clouds_ , MOBY's _The Rain Falls and the Sky Shudders_, EMOJONAL's _Silence of Water_ and MELANCHOLY OF THE LOVELESS' _Land of Unwanted Toys_. The live act scenics at the start of the jam at precisely 00:00:00 with a crescendo of the beats per minute included bodacious exotic quite naked babe dancers suddenly being put into the overhanging cages and an aluminium powder full body makeup trapezee act strong guy who came out of the B-29 replica and was then shuttled by a rail onto the dance floor while carrying two lit oversized olympic torches that burned blue. With that over the volume went up and the trance deep. Dj Transition was on first utilizing sampling from ORSON WELLEs narration of _The War of the Worlds_ , COLD SENSATION's _Control the Universe_ , SVEN VATH's _Ritual of Life_, ARPEGGIATOR's _Discover your Inner Self_, HOPE's _Treefrog_, CASPAR HOUSER's _Riding_ and many more. I went to the dance floor to trance and to view the ritualistics. There was a tight circle ring where eight nubile, very pretty, obviously underaged teen girls all wearing plastic black shades were dancing with one another. I thought they must be in the same school and had had practices when they did a coordinated dance to HOPE's _Treefrog_ . I arrived as she turned and greeted her - told her about the disk and the sunday papers and she looked in a drawer in the desk and pulled out a Verbatim 3 1/2" with dot matrix printed label.
