THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF SAN FRANCISCO WITH SUDZY COLLINS San Francisco is a musically diverse city where any type of music can be heard any night of the week from ambient to techno. Whether you're accustomed to becoming one with a bean-bag or slamming your head to 170bpm, this is the place for all of your aural fixations. You would have to be a super human to attend all of these happenings, but selectively you could easily find suitable gatherings that fit your personal needs. There are several things to keep in mind when selecting which parties to attend: promoters, location, sound system, DJ line-up and most importantly the music itself. By raising your awareness of party knowledge you can be more assured that you'll get what you pay for. Initially in San Francisco, ambient music could only be found at large- scale events, usually tucked away in a cubby hole somewhere. Currently, special events are being co-ordinated specifically around ambient, the music and the vibe. For those of you that enjoy ambient there's a party coming up on March 26th called "Ambience-The Irrestible Force" featuring Mixmaster Morris and guests. This party is strictly ambient so grab your bean-bags and don't miss it! Acid Jazz, like ambient, can usually be found at most multi-room parties. Jazzid Up a weekly Monday night club at 1190 Folsom primarily caters to serious Acid Jazz lovers. Resident DJ's Mark Farina, Is, Thomas, Ammon and guests, maintain the excellence by providing the freshest grooves. The venue has two seperate rooms which makes this club twice as nice and doubles the listening pleasure. Finally a reason to love Mondays. As you probably well know, San Francisco is known for it's fierce house music scene. Several local DJ's such as Jan Cooley, Markie, Neon Leon, Swing Kid, Aaron O., Pete Avila, the list goes on, spin straight up house at both weekly parties and other events. A number of out of town house DJs, Frankie Knuckles, Tony Humphries, Roger Sanchez, have blessed our bass bins with their heavy house beats. In fact Roger S was in town this month at Lift and he was on fire! If you're a house junkie in need of a fix check out Rhythm, Lift, Raw or one of the many other house clubs in SF. Once again techno is on the rise again here. On January 22nd "Industrial Strength" hosted a hardcore, bang you head until you get a nosebleed, party. This was just what this city needed to break the house hold that's been on the scene here. There was an overall good response for a party of this nature and I'm sure that there will be several more in the near future. There is a plethora of exciting events happening in SF even now in the middle of winter. It's time to get up, get out and start supporting your favorite local parties. As a culture, we need to stand together and keep our vibe alive. United we dance.....
